Although better known for his contributions with the 1980 gold medal-winning U.S. Olympic Hockey Team, Dave Silk brought the same prominence and recognition to the Boston University hockey program during the 1976 to 1979 seasons.
A strong skater, Silk enjoyed a stellar sophomore campaign during the 1977-78 season, when the Terriers compiled an overall mark of 30-2 and downed Boston College, 5-3, to secure their third national championship in eight years. Silk, who scored twice in the semifinal triumph over Wisconsin, was one of three Terriers to earn All-Tournament honors. In addition, the sophomore wing gained Second Team All-East and First-Team All-New England recognitions, and was twice named the ECAC Player of the Week, after finishing the year with 27 goals and 31 assists for 58 points.
However, his second-year success came as no surprise, for Silk turned in an even more productive campaign the year before, when he set freshman records for goals (35), assists (30)Â and points (65). He recorded hat tricks on five occasions and received New England Rookie of the Year honors for his offensive exploits.
Following his junior year, in which he scored eight goals and set up 12 others for 20 points, Silk joined former Terrier teammates Mike Eruzione, Jim Craig and Jack O'Callahan on the 1980 US Olympic Hockey Team. He tallied a goal in the opening-game tie with Sweden, added a goal and an assist in the win over Norway, and contributed a pair of assists in the 4-3 triumph over the Soviet Union.
After the Olympic competition in Lake Placid, Silk joined the New York Rangers to begin a seven-year NHL career that included stints with Boston, Detroit and Winnipeg.
In 1986, he ventured to Germany where he played for three years in Mannheim and two years in Berlin.
Silk concluded his playing career in 1991 and then returned to Boston University as an assistant hockey coach.
