PHILADELPHIA (October 31) -- The 1999 season came to an end for the B.U. men's soccer team on Sunday (October 31st) as the Terriers lost, 1-0, at Drexel in America East action. The team needed to either win or tie in their season finale in order to qualify for the league tournament.
With the loss, the Terriers, who missed qualifying for the tournament for the first time since 1989, finished the season with an 8-6-4 record overall and a 4-3-2 mark in league play.
Scoreless at the half, the Terriers dominated play in the second half, directing 11 shots on goal and taking four corner kicks. Unfortunately, none of the shots was able to beat Dragon goal keeper Mike Haberman, who had six saves for the game, five of which came in the second half.
It appeared the game might go into overtime, until the 88:57 mark of the game.
At that point, Drexel's Andy Bross challenged Terrier freshman keeper Matt Smith (Lanchester, England). Smith came eight yards out of the goal to stop the shot. However, the initial save bounced away from Smith, and the ball came free to Drexel's Reuben Shaffer, who touched the ball into the far corner for the game winner.
