Men Finish Second at Conference Championship
November 3, 1999 | Men's Soccer
HARTFORD, Conn. - Three Terrier runners finished in the top nine but it was not enough as the B.U. men's cross country team finished second at the 1999 America East Championships last Sunday (October 31st). The meet was held at Wickham Park in Manchester, CT and hosted by the University of Hartford.
The team title went to the University of New Hampshire, as the Wildcats swept the meet with their five runners finishing first, second, third, fourth, and fifth. The point total of 15 broke the previous team total record of 18 set by the 1994 Terrier team.
In this year's meet, B.U. finished runnerup with 55 points, followed, in order, by Maine, Delaware, Northeastern, Vermont, Towson, Hartford, and Hofstra.
Leading the way for B.U. was sophomore Fredrik Naalsund (Ski, Norway), who finished sixth overall in a time of 26:09.2 over the 8,000-meter course.
He was followed by sophomore Jason Borbet (Smithtown, NY), who was eighth in 26:12.9; freshman Paul Morrice (Auckland, NZ), ninth in 26:14.7; sophomore John Wiley (Palo Alto, CA), 15th in 26:56.2; and sophomore Justin Poland (North Scituate, RI), 17th in 27:05.3. Freshman Liam Revell (Belleville, Ontario, Canada) also ran for the Terriers and finished 31st in a time of 27:38.5, but since only the top five finishers count in a team's score, his finish was not included in the Terriers' team total.
I thought our top three finishers ran very well, said Terrier cross-country coach Bruce Lehane. But, we just didn't have the firepower we needed to beat New Hampshire. They have a very good team, and they executed very well.
We have a very young team, though, continued Lehane pointing to the fact the Terrier point scorers included a freshman and four sophomores. I think that this shows there is a lot of potential on our team.
