Trio Leads Men's Soccer To 2-0 Victory
September 12, 1999 | Men's Soccer
AMHERST, Mass. (September 12) -- Sophomore Joachim Kaland (Fonnes, Norway) and senior Tony Piperno (Warrington, PA) each scored second-half goals and freshman Matt Smith (Lanchester, England) notched his first collegiate shutout to lead the Terrier men's soccer team to a 2-0 win over host University of Massachusetts on Sunday (September 12th).
The win evened the Terriers' record to 2-2, as it marked the first time this year B.U. ended its game in regulation. The first three games went into overtime, two of which needed two overtimes to settle the outcome.
In Sunday's game vs. the Minutemen, the two teams battled to a scoreless tie through the first 45 minutes of action.
Then, Kaland put the Terriers on the scoreboard with what proved to be the game-winning goal with just 9:33 to play in regulation. Junior Kirk Miller (Minnetonka, MN) and senior Sigurd Dalen (Oslo, Norway) assisted on the goal.
It marked the return to action for Dalen, who had missed Friday's game at the University of Rhode Island with a sprained ankle.
Less than five minutes later, with just 5:18 to play in regulation, Piperno added an insurance goal for the Terriers on an unassisted play.
Smith turned aside five Minuteman shots en route to the win.
