MIAMI (Sept. 3) - Sophomore Joachim Kaland scored at 8:37 of sudden overtime to give the Terrier men's soccer team a 2-1 win over Florida International in the opening round of the Florida International Soccer Classic. It marked the season opener for the Terriers who will play Florida Atlantic University on Sunday afternoon in the title game. FAU earned a berth in the title game with a 1-0 win over the University of Rhode Island. The game-winner by Kaland came on an eight-yard cross with an assist by All-American Sigurd Dalen. After a scoreless first half, Tony Piperno put the Terriers ahead, 1-0, at the 62:11 mark. Kaland took the initial shot and earned an assist after his attempt was deflected wide to the left side. Piperno collected the loose ball and fired into an open net. The Golden Panthers tied the game at the 73:08 mark when Sean Barrett took a cross from teammate Kevin Phillipson and scored from short range. That's the way it remained through the rest of regulation and for the first 8:37 of overtime before Kaland scored the game-winner. FIU outshot the Terriers, 12-9, during the game, including 6-2 in the first half. Wally Crittendon made two saves in the FIU net, and both came in the second half. Terrier freshman Matt Smith earned the win, although he did not make any saves.
"I was very pleased with how we played tonight," said head coach Neil Roberts. "We showed improvement with our offense and scored two goals. I also thought we continued to play well defensively as we have been doing during the pre-season."
