Dorman Leads Men's Soccer To Win Over Maine
October 10, 2000 | Men's Soccer
Freshman Andy Dorman (Flintshire, Wales) scored his first collegiate hat trick in helping to lead the Terrier men's soccer team to a 5-1 win over host University of Maine on Sunday (October 8th).
It was the first America East win of the season for the Terriers, who are now 1-2-1 and tied for sixth in the league. It also ended a two-match losing streak for B.U., which is now 5-5-2 overall.
It marked the most goals scored in a game by the Terriers this year. Their previous high was three, which they scored against Syracuse, Boston College, and Dartmouth. Two of those games ended in wins-3-2 in two overtimes over Syracuse in the season opener on September 1st, and 3-0 over Dartmouth on September 16th. On September 3rd, the Terriers scored three times, but it was not enough as they bowed to Boston College, 4-3, in two overtimes.
"We came out hard and aggressive against Maine," said head coach Neil Roberts.
"Andy scored his first goal early in the game, and it set a tone for the team."
Dorman notched his first goal just five minutes into the game when he deflected a blast by sophomore Mark Lynch (Richmond, VA).
Senior Kirk Miller (Minnetonka, MN) increased the Terrier lead to 2-0 just over two minutes later when he successfully converted on a penalty kick awarded to the Terriers after sophomore Markus Raisenan (Lotitaja, Finland) was tripped in the box by a Black Bear defender.
The Black Bears ended B.U.'s bid for a shutout in the game's 28th minute when Russell Hutchison deflected an indirect kick past B.U. sophomore goalkeeper Matt Smith (Lanchester, England).
Smith went on to record the win, his first in almost a year. He had been sidelined since before pre-season practice with a broken bone in his right hand.
Smith, who missed the team's first 10 games, saw his first action of the season at New Hampshire on Friday (October 6th). He was charged with the 2-0 loss, but came back to beat Maine on Sunday.
With his team leading by a scant one-goal margin, 2-1, Dorman picked up his second goal just 24 seconds into the second half when a shot from over 40 yards hit the lower edge of the crossbar and bounded into the Maine goal.
Dorman, who did not join the B.U. team until a few days before the season opener against Syracuse, completed his hat trick at 55:22 with a rocket from 30 yards out that sailed into the top right corner of the Black Bear goal.
Lynch closed out the Terrier scoring with 24 minutes remaining when his header off a corner kick by senior Chris Bone (Manchester, England) found its way into the Maine net.
