Dorman, Smith Lead Men's Soccer Over Hartford
October 20, 2000 | Men's Soccer
Freshman Andy Dorman scored his fifth goal of the season and sophomore Matt Smith posted his first shutout of the year to lead the Terrier men's soccer team to a 1-0 win over America East rival University of Hartford at B.U. on Oct. 20.
The win kept the Terriers' hopes alive for a post-season America East playoff bid as B.U. improved to 6-6-2 overall and 2-3-1 in the league. In the meantime, defending league champion Hartford slipped to an overall record of 6-7-3 and a league mark of 2-3-2.
"We're still alive," Terrier head coach Neil Roberts said after the game in referring to his team's chances for the post-season tournament. "Actually, we have been playing well the past four games. It's just we haven't had the results we had tonight.
"Tonight, things finally went our way," the coach went on. "We were creating chances, and we didn't have any defensive letdowns."
The two teams battled to a 0-0 tie in the first half although the Terriers dominated play, outshooting the Hawks, 10-5, and holding a slight edge in corner kicks, 1-0.
B.U. continued to press in the second half, but it wasn't until the 51:06 mark that Dorman scored what proved to be the game's only goal.
He took a feed from sophomore Anthony D'Angelo from about 30 yards out from the Hartford goal. Dorman dribbled forward and fired a shot that went to the far corner of the goal, beating Hartford keeper Christopher Doyle.
"Tony gave me a great ball," Dorman said after the game. "I turned and saw the net in front of me. I dribbled to about the 18-yard box and took the shot."
The Terriers continued its attack on Doyle, and senior Chris Bone narrowly made it 2-0 with 11:30 to play in regulation, but his shot hit the cross bar.
In the meantime, Smith, who missed the first 10 games of the season with a broken bone in his right hand, stopped each Hartford challenge.
He finished the game with five saves en route to improving his overall record to 2-2-0.
"Smitty played a great game," said Roberts. "He showed he is back to the form he showed last year. The players know he's back, and they have a lot of confidence in him."
B.U. outshot the Hawks, 26-14, while the two teams tied in corner kicks, 3-3.
The Terriers have another big game in front of them this on Oct. 22 when they host Vermont at 1:00 p.m.
"This was a great effort and a great win for the team tonight," Roberts told his team in the post-game lockerroom. "But, it won't mean much if we don't win on Sunday. We have to get ready for Vermont.
"It's another key game for us if we hope to make the playoffs."
