Terriers Battle Hofstra to 1-1 Tie
September 29, 2000 | Men's Soccer
BOSTON (Sept. 29, 2000) -- Senior midfielder Kirk Miller (New York, NY) scored his seventh goal of the season and sophomore goalkeeper Michael Cardenas (Framingham, MA) recorded 10 saves as the Boston University men's soccer played Hofstra to a 1-1 tie at Nickerson Field Friday night. B.U. is now 4-3-2 on the season. Hofstra is 3-2-3. It was the opening America East Conference game for both schools.
Miller scored his seventh goal in eight games just 10:43 into the contest, knocking a nice through ball from Karl Ruegemer (Minnetonka, MN) past Hofstra goalkeeper Andrew Brooke from 10 yards out to give the Terriers a 1-0 lead.
Cardenas made several big stops for the Terriers, none bigger than the point blank stop he made on Aboubacar Camara with 4:50 left in the second overtime.
"Their goakeeper played real well," said Terrier head coach Neil Roberts. "But Michael had some outstanding saves as well."
Roberts, in his 16th season as the Terriers head coach, is now 197-77-41, three wins shy of 200 career victories at B.U.
Hofstra began to take the play to the Terriers in the second half, and tied the score at 1-1 on Luckisee Williams' header off a Patrick Geraghty corner at 51:53.
The Terriers began to take some of the play back towards the end of the half, but couldn't convert their scoring opportunities. Freshman midfielder Sebastian Jablonski (Avon, CT) got behind the defense 15 minutes into the second half, but couldn't corral a cross to the middle and Brooke, who had six saves, was able to make the stop.
Two minutes later, freshman midfielder Andy Dorman (Flintshire, Wales, UK) sent Michael Feely (Lemmington Spa, England) in all alone down the right side, but Brooke slid out to take the ball away.
Williams nearly won the game for the Flying Dutchmen with six minutes left, but his shot was headed away at the far post by sophomore midfielder Mark Lynch (Richmond, VA).
"I thought our defense played real well tonight," said Roberts.
B.U. began to dominate the overtime stanzas, where senior midfielder Chris Bone (Newcastle, England) and sophomore back Marcus Raisemen (Lotitaja, Finland) each came close on headers. Bone's shot was turned away by Brooke with five minutes to go in the first overtime, while Raisemen's header sailed just over the crossbar two minutes into the second overtime.
"At times we played pretty well and at times we lost it," said Roberts. "But it was good to see us play the way we did in overtime. We had our chances, but so did they. This is one of the better Hofstra teams I've seen."
The Terriers return to action on Sunday, October 1 at Nickerson Field against America East opponent Drexel at 1 p.m.
