Men's Soccer Defeats Albany In Overtime, 3-2
October 19, 2001 | Men's Soccer
Sophomore defender Michael Feely scored the game-winning goal a little more than four minutes into overtime to lift the Terrier men's soccer team to a 3-2 America East Conference win over host University of Albany on Friday night (October 19th).
The win lifted B.U. to an overall record of 8-4-1, while the team improved to 4-1-1 in the league. In the meantime, Albany, playing its first season in America East, slipped to a 6-6-0 record overall and a 3-3-0 log in the league.
The play that set up the game-winning goal was started by a Terrier corner kick. After the corner by sophomore Andrew Dorman, there was a scramble in front of the Albany goal. Feely collected the loose ball and delivered it into the left corner of the net.
It was a very physical contest highlighted by eight cards-seven yellows and one red. Of the total, the Terriers were whistled for four yellows, while Albany had three yellows and a red. In fact, both teams played a man down for the final eight minutes of the second half and the 4:09 of the overtime.
In addition, there were three penalty kicks that resulted in goals. Terrier senior captain Joachim Kaland had two penalty kick goals for the Terriers, while Greg Chevalier had one for Albany.
Kaland, who increased his season goal total to 14, opened the scoring with a penalty kick at 24:24 of the match. His shot found the lower left corner of the goal.
Albany tied the game a little more than four minutes later when Steven Procknal scored his third goal of the season on a header that resulted off a rebound from the right post. The goal came at 28:26.
Kaland put the Terriers ahead, 2-1, on his second penalty kick goal at 71:12. His shot found the center of the net.
Chevalier countered with his penalty kick goal at 77:40 as the two teams were knotted at 2-2. That's the way the score remained until Feely's game-winner.
Albany outshot the Terriers, 24-17, while B.U. held the edge in corner kicks, 7-5.
B.U. freshman goalkeeper Zak Thompson had two saves en route to the win. Trevor Serraro had 11 saves in the losing effort.
