Defense Leads Terriers to First Win of the Season
November 18, 2001 | Women's Basketball

BOSTON - The Terrier women's basketball team allowed just five field goals in the first half and went on to defeat Georgia Southern, 70-55, in the consolation game of the B. U. Women's Basketball Invitational on Sunday (Nov.18) at Case Gymnasium.
South Florida defeated Southern Methodist University, 79-64, in the championship game with Tournament MVP Jen Kline scoring 17 points with five steals.
B. U.'s zone defense held Georgia Southern to 24 percent shooting from the floor and forced 29 turnovers. The Lady Eagles didn't score their first field goal until Sarah Davis hit a jumper at 10:14 of the first half.
Sophomore guard Katie Terhune (Port Murray, NJ) paced the Terriers offensively, scoring 19 points and grabbing 5 rebounds. Terhune was named to the All-Tournament Team for her efforts. She finished the weekend with a combined 37 points, 17 rebounds and was 13-of-16 from the free throw line.
"If we can get her open, we know she can shoot to score," said head coach Margaret McKeon. "She's no doubt our 'go-to' player."
B. U. led 30-26 at the break, and went on a 12-2 run midway through the second half to pull away with the victory.
Senior guard Dia Dufualt (Malone, NY) led the Terriers defensive pressure, picking up five steals in addition to her 14 points and game-high 11 rebounds.
Sophomore Marisa Moseley (Longmeadow, MA) was the third Terrier in double figures, scoring 11 points with 5 boards.
"Marisa really stepped it up today," said McKeon. "She can play the way she played today, night in and night out."
With Terrier point guard Courtney Jones (Lafayette Hills, PA) still seeing limited time while recovering from a wrist injury, junior Alison Argentieri (Hornell, NY) led the Terriers offense while chipping in eight points and three steals.
"Ali did some real nice things handling the ball under pressure today," said McKeon. "She's still learning how to be a floor general, but she did a good job today."
For the Terriers, it was their first win of the season following a 76-70 loss to South Florida yesterday in the first round of the tournament.
"I went with my veterans from last season today to get the job done and it paid off," said McKeon.
The Terriers did commit 26 fouls in the game, sending the Lady Eagles to the line 36 times. In fact, 15 of Georgia Southern's first half points came from the charity stripe.
B.U. will visit cross-town rival Harvard on Tuesday. Game time is 7 p.m.
