Huntsville, TX - The Terrier defense held Sam Houston State to 21 second-half points and B.U. went on to win their fifth-straight game, defeating Sam Houston State, 59-49, on Friday night (Nov. 30) in Huntsville.
The Terriers' full-court press forced 32 Bearkat turnovers, including 17 in the first half. B.U. held Sam Houston State scoreless for more than five minutes during three different spans of the game.
"I'm real proud of our defense," said head coach Margaret McKeon, who in her third season with the Terriers is enjoying the longest winning streak of her coaching career.
"To win by 10 on the road is huge. And to only give up 49 points is very impressive."
The Terriers are enjoying their longest winning streak since the 1994-95 season when they won five straight from late-December to mid-January and finished their season with an 18-10 overall record.
The Bearkats came out strong in the opening minutes, as Kelly Brown hit a three-pointer to put Sam Houston up 7-2 for their largest lead of the game at 17:59.
B.U. answered by holding the Bearkats scoreless for the next five minutes and went on a 12-2 run to go up 14-9 at the nine minute mark.
Sophomore forward Marisa Moseley (Longmeadow, MA) was an aggressive force in the paint, grabbing seven of her career-high nine rebounds in the first half.
With the Terriers leading 33-28 at the break, sophomore guard Katie Terhune (Port Murray, NJ) bounced back from a slow first-half to score 13 of her team-high 15 points in the second to lead the Terriers offensively.
Terhune scored six unanswered points to give the Terriers a 43-32 advantage, but Brown scored seven of her team-high 12 points midway through the second and the Bearkats cut the lead to three with six minutes to go in the game at 48-43.
Moseley ended any chance of a Sam Houston comeback when she hit a turn-around jumper on the baseline at 6:14 to put the Terriers up, 50-45.
"Marisa came up real big for us," said McKeon. "She made that big bucket to put us up by five when they were on a run. She was real strong tonight for us."
The Terriers would hold the Bearkats scoreless for the next five minutes and went on an 11-4 run to end the game.
Sophomore forward Ashley Carr (Milwaukee, WI) teamed with Moseley in the lane, scoring a career-high eight points with nine rebounds.
As a team, B.U. out-rebounded Sam Houston, 45-34, with 19 boards coming on the offensive end.
Senior guard Dia Dufault (Malone, NY) scored six points with five rebounds and a team-high five assists while freshman forward Adrienne Norris (Delafield, WI) grabbed a team-high five offensive rebounds.
"I'm ecstatic that we're 5-1," said McKeon. "I never thought this was going to be an easy game for us. But the bottom line is that we made the big plays when it counted to get the win."
B.U. faces their toughest opponent of season when they take on 12th-ranked Baylor University on Sunday in Waco, Texas. Game time is 2 p.m.
