Dixon Leads Terriers In Regular-Season Finale
March 1, 2001 | Women's Basketball
Senior co-captain Alison Dixon, playing in the final home game of her collegiate career, scored a game-high 24 points and pulled down nine rebounds to lead the Terriers to a 73-58 win over Northeastern on Thursday night (March 1st).
With the win, the Terriers closed out the regular-season on a high note, winning four of their last six games, and one of the losses came on a last-second shot at New Hampshire last Sunday. The win over Northeastern on Thursday night improved the Terriers' overall record of 9-18, while they are 6-12 in America East.
The team finished eighth in the final league standings and will play ninth-place Hofstra in the first round of the America East Tournament next Wednesday (March 7th).
A four-year starter, Dixon will graduate as the second-leading all-time scorer in B.U. history. Entering next week's post-season tournament, the former America East Rookie of the Year has scored 1620 points during her career. The only player with more points is Debbie Miller Palmore, who scored 1869 points from 1977-81.
"Allie has been doing this night in and night out during her four-year career at Boston University," Terrier head coach Margaret McKeon said after the game. "We have been trying to get her the ball more during the season. But, we are so young that it has taken our players time to understand their roles.
"As the season has gone on, everyone knows their roles, and that's one of the reasons Allie has been scoring more points."
Indeed she has as she has scored in double figures in six of her last seven games and in eight of her last 10.
Against Northeastern, Dixon, who finished the game 10-of-16 from the field, scored eight of her points in the first half.
The big offensive output in the first 20 minutes was turned in by freshman Katie Terhune, who had 12 of her game-total 20 points before intermission.
B.U. opened the game by spotting the Huskies a 5-0 lead just 44 seconds into the game. At that point, McKeon called a 20-second timeout to calm her team down.
The move paid off as the Terriers went on a 17-3 run to lead 17-8 with 11:54 to play in the after. After that, B.U. never looked back.
The Terriers, who shot a torrid 55.6 percent from the field in the first half (15-of-27), led 35-24 at the break.
The Huskies managed to cut the deficit to six points in the second half-39-33 with 16:49 to play in the game. That's as close as Northeastern would get as B.U. opened its lead to as many as 19 points-58-39, on a layup by Dixon with 8:50 to play in the game.
"I think we played a real good floor game tonight," said McKeon. "We played defense very well. They shot just 26 percent from the floor in the first half and 31 percent for the game. Plus, we forced them into 22 turnovers.
"The only thing I didn't like is that they had 25 offensive boards," the coach went on.
"We have been playing very well the last month," said McKeon. "That's what you want when you go into the post-season tournament.
"We are going into the tournament with a lot of confidence," she concluded. "I think we are going to be a dangerous team to play."
