BOSTON - Jennifer Shields of Simi Valley, Calif. and Christy King, of Albuquerque, N. M. will both attend Boston University and play softball for the Terriers beginning in the fall of 2001, head coach Amy Hayes announced today.
Shields was a four-year starter at first base and catcher for Simi Valley High School, earning All League honors in 1998, 1999 and 2000. She also won the teams' scholar-athlete award after her freshman, sophomore and junior years. Shields played for the California Batbusters, who finished in 3rd-place in the ASA 18-and-under Gold National Softball Tournament. She chose B. U. over Arizona State, California State-Northridge and New Mexico State.
"Jenni is going to be a solid presence behind the plate for us next year," said Hayes. "She has a strong and accurate throwing arm, and a lot of power at the plate. This summer she will be playing with the Stealth Gold, which is the team that produced B. U. senior catcher Leslie Linnemeyer. Jenni will help fill the void left by Leslie's graduation."
King is the first student-athlete from the state of New Mexico to play softball at B. U. She garnered All District softball honors in 1998, 1999 and 2000 playing for the Albuquerque Academy Chargers. The catcher/utility player can play a multiple positions, and was recruited by the University of California-San Diego.
"Christy is a tremendous all-around athlete, who will contribute to the team at several positions," said Hayes. "She's an extremely smart and motivated player who will see time behind the plate as well as in the infield and outfield.
Shields and King will join a Boston University team that is losing five seniors graduation, including Linnemeyer, who anchored the Terriers at the catcher position for the past four years.
"Both Jenni and Christy have demonstrated a strong desire to come to Boston University," said Hayes. "Their passion and loyalty towards this University and out softball program will be exemplified even more so once they hit the field in red and white. I am very proud to add them to the 2001 recruiting class."
