Men's Soccer Match Vs. UConn Rescheduled
September 3, 2001 | Men's Soccer
The Terrier men's soccer match at the University of Connecticut, which had been scheduled for Wednesday, September 5th has been moved to Thursday, September 6th because of scheduling conflicts with the Huskies. Game time of 7:00 p.m. remains the same.
The Terriers, who will enter the game with a 2-0-0 mark as they are off to their best start since 1998, will be coming of back-to-back wins over Army, 1-0, and Lehigh, 4-1. Both games were in the Lehigh Nike Classic which were played on Friday (August 31st) and Sunday (September 2nd).
In the meantime, UConn will enter the game with an 0-1-1 record as the Huskies opened the season with a tie against the University of Akron and a loss to the University of Washington.
The Huskies will play St. Francis on Tuesday (September 4th) which caused the date of the Terrier game to be rescheduled.
"I am glad we are having the extra day off," said Terrier head coach Neil Roberts, who was pleased with how his team opened the season. "I was very happy with the effort, commitment, and desire we showed over the weekend," the coach said while referring to the tournament at Lehigh University.
"In Friday's game against Army, we were down a couple of players. As a result, we had just two extra players. As a result, everyone had to battle hard, and they did.
"Then, in Sunday's game against Lehigh, everyone was back," said Roberts. "And, we played very well.
"Smitty (junior goalkeeper Matt Smith of Lanchester, England) made two big saves in the first half of the Lehigh game and that really allowed us to win," the coach recalled. "The first save come on a point blank shot that kept us with a 2-0 lead. Then, late in the half, he stopped a penalty shot and did not give them a rebound.
"Had Lehigh scored on that shot, they would have gone into the locker room at halftime with momentum. Instead, Smitty made the save, and we went into the half with the momentum.
"Everyone played well against Lehigh, though," Roberts concluded. "Smitty, (junior) Tony D'Angelo (Tewksbury) at midfield, Joe (senior captain Joachim Kaland from Fonnes, Norway), Andy (sophomore Andy Dorman from Flintshire, Wales). The entire team played well."
