BOSTON - The Boston University men's soccer team battled to a 1-1 tie with the University at Albany in an America East conference game on Saturday afternoon (Oct. 19) at Nickerson Field.
It marked the second time in as many games that the Terriers (7-3-2, 2-0-1) played to a 1-1 tie at home. On October 13, B.U. played 110 minutes against West Virginia, earning a 1-1 split.
"In the last two games, we've had chances to win," said Terrier head coach Neil Roberts. "The difficult part of the game is creating scoring chances, and we can do that. Its disappointing that we're not putting the chances away."
Albany (7-4-2, 2-0-2) took an early lead when the Terriers misplayed a ball out of their defensive zone. Caio Silva settled the ball 30 feet in front of the goal and drove a long shot into the bottom left corner of the net past a diving Matt Smith (Lanchester, England) at 14:45 in the first half.
Junior midfielder Andrew Dorman (Flintshire, Wales), who led the Terriers with four shots on goal, set up the Terriers' lone score. Dorman lofted a corner kick into the box and junior back Michael Feely (Lemmington Spa, England) took a shot that bounced off an Albany defender. Sophomore midfielder Federico Bianchi (Pacific Palisades, CA) lifted the rebound over the head of Albany goalkeeper Bouna Coundal and into the net to tie the score, 1-1, at 41:46.
Despite out-shooting the Great Danes, 18-10, in regulation, the Terriers were only able to tally the single goal. B.U. also held a 13-3 advantage on corner kicks in the first 90 minutes of play.
"We had the people we wanted in front of the goal to score," said Roberts. "We just need to learn how to finish."
The Terriers had their best scoring chances in the second overtime period, but on several occasions lifted shots high over the cross bar. Dorman had two shots and junior forward Alan McNamara (Woodview Raheem, Ireland) had another sail high above the net in the final minutes of double overtime.
Albany's Vadim Iwanyuskchenko nearly gave the Great Danes the win with five minutes left in the second overtime when he drove a long shot from outside the box. Smith was able to come up with the save for the Terriers.
Coundal made eight saves while Smith totaled five.
On the game, the Terriers held a 23-13 advantage in shots.
Up next, B.U. travels cross-town to take on Northeastern on Wednesday, Oct. 23. Game time is 6:00 p.m. at Parsons Field.
