Terriers Fall To Hawks, 2-1
October 30, 2002 | Men's Soccer
BOSTON - Easton Wilson scored the game-winning goal in the 79th minute of play to lead the University of Hartford men's soccer team to a 2-1 conference win over Boston University on Wednesday night at Nickerson Field.
It was the Terriers' first loss at home in 2002, as they are now 6-1-2 at Nickerson Field. Overall, the team is 7-6-3 and 2-3-1 in the America East. Hartford improved to 6-10-0 overall and 4-3-0 in the America East.
Hartford took an early lead when America East leading-scorer Alon Lubezky found his brother, Asaf, streaking down the left sideline in the eighth minute of play. Asaf fired a shot into the lower left corner of the net past a diving Terrier goalie Matt Smith (Lanchester, England) at 8:45.
B.U.'s leading scorer Andrew Dorman (Flintshire, Wales) sparked the Terrier counter attack, driving into the box and forcing Hartford goalkeeper Ryan Carr to play the ball and commit a foul, which resulted in a penalty kick. Freshman Jamie Johnson (Brisbane, Australia) took the penalty kick and drove the ball into the lower left corner past Carr to tie the game, 1-1, at 30:55.
The Terriers' offense looked confident in the second half, out-shooting the Hawks, 10-3, but B.U. was unable to score the goahead goal as Carr finished with a game-high eight saves, including six after the intermission.
Instead, it was the Hawks who were able to score the game-winner when Easton dribbled by the defense on Hartford's final scoring drive, as he beat Smith at 79:19.
The Terriers battled over the final minutes of regulation to come up with the tying goal. Their final attempt came with less than 10 seconds showing on the clock. Smith blasted a clear from the midfield and a scrum ensued on the goal line. However, time expired before the Terriers could put the ball across the goal line.
The Terriers, who suffered their third straight loss, have two games left to play this season. They will host Vermont at 3 pm on Sunday and then travel to Stony Brook next Tuesday (November 5th).
