Other formats have been a two-game mini-game (1985), a two-game/total-goal series (1986 and 1998), two-game/total points (1993), and single elimination (1987, 1989, 1991, 1992, and 1995).

In the series opener, Providence skated to a 6-3 win behind two-goal efforts by Devin Rask and J.J. Picnic. Mike Pandolfo, who went on to be named to the Hockey East All-Tournament Team even though the Terriers were eliminated in the quarterfinals, scored twice for the Terriers but it was not enough. Jason Tapp started the game for the Terriers but gave way to Sean Fields at 9:35 of the first period. Nolan Schaefer played for the Friars. The Terriers bounced back in the second game behind the 37-save effort by Fields in a 2-1 win. Freddy Meyer scored the game-winning goal at 7:56 of the second period. Earlier, John Luszcz had scored for Providence, while Pandolfo countered with a goal for B.U. Then, in the second game, the Terriers spotted the Minutemen a 2-0 lead before they came roaring back with five unanswered goals. Tommi Degerman scored twice, and Baker, Sabo, and Pat Aufiero scored one each. DiPietro had 24 saves in the Terrier net. |

The Terriers turned the tables the next night with 5 second-period goals to skate off with an 8-2 win. However, the Friar attack proved too much the third night in a 5-1 win. The loss ended the Terriers' season at 14-20-3 overall and 8-13-3 in the league, marking the first time in a decade B.U. finished with a losing record. |
