Terriers Fall to #13 UCLA in Season Opener

Fullerton, CA - Paced by three second-half goals, the 13th-ranked UCLA men's soccer team defeated Boston University, 4-1, in the 2002 season opener at the Cal State - Fullerton Soccer Town Classic on Friday, August 30.
Ryan Futagi opened the scoring for the Bruins, converting a penalty shot at 22:45 of the first half.
Freshman forward Jamie Johnson (Brisbane, Australia) placed a hard shot from 18 feet out to notch his first career goal at 59:28. The goal, which tied the game at 1-1, came off a feed from junior midfielder Andrew Dorman (Flintshire, Wales).
The Bruins then rallied with three consecutive goals over a ten-minute span. Aldolfo Gregorio scored twice, the first at 69:29 assisted by Ty Maurin. Six minutes later, Gregorio found Tim Pierce on a cross, chipping the ball past Terrier senior goalkeeper Matt Smith (Lanchester, England) to take a 3-1 lead. Gregorio scored an unassisted goal at 78:57 for the Bruins final goal.
Bruins starting goalkeeper Zach Wells made one save in 84:46. Reserve Nate Pena played the final 5:14 and was not contested. Smith made five stops for the Terriers.
UCLA out-shot B.U. 18-7 and had a 9-2 advantage in shots on goal.
The Terriers, whose loss to the Bruins snapped an eight game season-opener win streak, will look to bounce back from the early setback when they face tournament-host Cal State - Fullerton on Sunday, September 1 at 10:00 p.m. EST.
The Terriers return to action tomorrow (April 21) against Binghamton at 1 p.m.
