Boston - Sophomore midfielder Federico Bianchi (Pacific Palisades, CA) scored in the 66th minute of play to give the Boston University men's soccer team a 1-0 win over seventh-ranked University of Connecticut on Tuesday night at Nickerson Field.
Off a long throw in by senior back David Fahey (Plainfield, NJ), Bianchi battled for position, had his first shot blocked and fired another shot into the lower left corner of the goal past UConn goalkeeper Adam Schuerman at 66:58.
"This was an excellent match against an excellent team," said Terrier head coach Neil Roberts, whose team improved to 4-1-1 with the victory and extended its winning streak to four games.
The Huskies (3-2-0) had a number of scoring chances in the second half, including a possession in the 55th minute of play in which Terrier goalkeeper Matt Smith (Lanchester, England) made back-to-back blocks of shots by Cesar Cuellar and Andres Rota. Smith, who earned his fourth win and second shutout win of the season, finished with nine saves.
"Matt came up big, especially after we got the lead," said Roberts. "After that goal, we knew they were going to come back hard at us for a few minutes. But we were able to hold them off."
The Terriers totaled 11 shots in the game, but only two shots on net. In the loss, Schuerman made one save.
After a seven-day layoff, the Terriers (4-1-1) return to action when they play cross-town rival Boston College on September 25. Game time is 3 p.m. at Alumni Stadium.
