Men's Soccer Blanked by Buffalo, 2-0
October 2, 2005 | Men's Soccer
BOSTON ??? The Boston University men???s soccer team (3-5-1 overall, 0-0-1 America East) suffered its first loss in four games by a score of 2-0 to the nearly undefeated University at Buffalo (10-1-0 overall, 0-0-0 MAC) at Nickerson Field on Sunday (Oct. 2) afternoon. Andrae Clarke, who ranks in the top ten in the nation in multiple offensive categories, scored both goals for the Bulls.
Falling victim to the nation???s fifth best offense, the Terriers saw extremely physical play from the Bulls, who accumulated 11 fouls and six yellow cards in the 90:00. The Bulls scored the only goal they would need in the 21st minute, and followed it up with another tally midway through the second half for their 10th win of the season.
???I think what you saw was a poorly motivated BU team,??? said Terrier Head Coach Neil Roberts, who placed blame on both the team and himself for lack of preparedness. ???They beat us to almost every ball and it was disappointing.???
BU junior captain goalkeeper Chad Comroe (Dallas, Texas) was tested early on, but prevailed with two saves, including a diving save to stop a direct kick in the third minute. It was not until the Bulls caught him on a breakaway that he faltered. Erik Jaanimagi sent the ball to Clark, who got away from the Terriers and beat Comroe to the top left corner of the net at 20:22.
The Bulls??? only shot on target in the second half proved to be their second goal. Matt Stuczynski dribbled the ball down the right side and, with pressure from Terrier sophomore back Shane Westbrook (St. Louis, Mo.), shuffled a pass to Lee Catchpole, who connected with Andrae Clark in front of the net. Clark completed the play for his second goal of the match and seventh on the season.
On the upside, of the Terriers??? top recruits, back Zach Bauer (St. Louis, Mo.), saw his first action of the season, after a pre-season injury forced him to sit out the first eight games. Also returning from injury was junior back Zach Kirby (Marietta, Ga.). A notable omission from the BU line-up was last season???s leading scorer sophomore forward Roland Erlichman (Paradise Valley, Ariz.), who left Wednesday???s (Sept. 28) game with an injury.
The Terriers out shot the Bulls 12-8 and held the 2-1 corner-kick advantage, while Dan Bell made four stops for Buffalo and Comroe had three for BU.
BU returns to America East play on Wednesday (Oct. 5) versus Stony Brook at 7:00 p.m. at Nickerson Field.
