September 28, 2005 | Men's Soccer
AMHERST, Mass. ??? The Boston University men???s soccer team (3-4-1 overall, 0-0-1 America East) downed the University of Massachusetts (3-6-0 overall, 0-0-0 Atlantic 10) by a 3-1 tally in a non-conference match at Rudd Field on Sept. 28. Three different Terriers scored in the win, including two goals in the first eight minutes, as BU is now unbeaten in its last three games.
Senior Sedrick Chin (St. Mary, Jamaica) scored just 3:29 into the game and the Terriers never looked back, expanding their lead to two goals less than four minutes later. The Minutemen got on the board midway through the half to come within one, but BU struck again in the final minutes of the game to post its largest margin of victory this season. It was also the first time this year that the Terriers have held the lead through the entire game.
???It was a really good team performance,??? said BU Head Coach Neil Roberts, who is in his 21st season at the helm. ???We played well from the start and it was nice to get the early goals. Some different guys stepped up for us and made it a solid group effort.???
Chin did not waste any time in finding the back of the net for the second time this season. With BU dominating the possession early on, reigning America East Rookie of the Week Neil Hlavaty (Lombard, Ill.) got the ball to Chin, who put it in the far side corner from 15 yards at 3:29.
Continuing on the momentum, the Terriers again capitalized on an opportunity in the eighth minute. A shot by senior captain Matt Cross (Pembroke, Mass.) hit the post and sophomore Roland Erlichman (Paradise Valley, Ariz.) got the rebound header from inside the six-yard box and put it past UMass goalkeeper Nick Billman at 7:03 for the 2-0 Terrier lead. It was Erlichman???s first goal of the season after leading the Terriers with 23 points (9 goals, 5 assists) as a rookie last year
The Minutemen cut the lead in half at 28:13 when Kenneth Cook???s header off a cross from a corner kick beat Terrier keeper Zach Riffett (Brenham, Texas). After allowing the single goal, Riffett held tight for the remaining 61 minutes, with two saves in the second half to preserve the Terrier lead. The junior netminder is now 3-1-1 on the season.
Freshman Dan Schultz (Cincinnati, Ohio) recorded his first career goal and added insurance for the Terriers as the minutes wound down in the game. He hit the left corner of the net from five yards at 88:45 off a pass from Chin, who had three points on the night.
The Terriers out shot the Minutemen, 10-7, while UMass had the 6-0 corner-kick advantage.
BU returns home to Nickerson Field for another non-conference game versus Buffalo at 4:00 p.m. on Sunday (Oct. 2).
