BOSTON - After opening the year with a pair of road wins at Robert Morris, the Boston University women’s ice hockey team will open its home schedule when it welcomes RPI to Walter Brown Arena for a two-game series beginning on Friday, Oct. 13.
Freshman Melissa Anderson (Langley, B.C.) assisted on 3-of-4 goals Friday night in a 4-1 victory and added another assist on Saturday. Co-captain Gina Kearns (Norwood, Pa.) also recorded a four-point weekend, picking up two assists on Friday night and two of the Terriers' three goals in a 3-2 win on Saturday afternoon. Sophomore Allyse Wilcox (Grand Blanc, Mich.) earned the win in goal on both nights, making a combined 40 saves in the two victories.
The two wins on the road mark a vast improvement for the squad early in the season. The 2005-06 inaugural team picked up only two road wins the whole season. Despite the difficult road record, the Terriers hope Walter Brown Arena receives them as well as last year, when the team went 9-5-2 at home.
Rensselaer makes its first trip to Boston University after sweeping the Terriers at home last season by scores of 7-3 and 5-3. The weekend games at BU mark the second time that RPI has faced a Hockey East school this year. The Engineers, who are in their first season in the ECACHL, opened their season at No. 10 Boston College and hung with the Eagles throughout the second period before BC’s Allie Thunstrom broke a 1-1 tie late in the third period. RPI traveled to North Dakota last weekend, narrowly dropping both games (3-1, 3-2).
Game times are scheduled for 7:00 p.m. on Friday night and 3:00 p.m. on Saturday afternoon.
Wilcox Earns Honors
Goaltender Allyse Wilcox (Grand Blanc, Mich.) picked up the Hockey East Defensive Player of the Week award for her performance during the sweep of Robert Morris. Wilcox made 40 saves on the weekend, allowing only three goals. In both games, Robert Morris scored first, before Wilcox stonewalled the Colonials, helping BU to comeback wins on both Friday (4-1) and Saturday (3-2).
Century Mark
Co-captain Cara Hendry (Calgary, Alta.) played in her 100th career collegiate game Friday, Oct. 6, at Robert Morris. The senior played in 66 games with Minnesota State-Mankato before transferring to Boston University for her junior year. Last year with the Terriers, Hendry played in all 33 games, with seven goals and 14 assists. During her milestone game, Hendry picked up her first assist of the 2006-07 season.
Making Strides
Members of the women’s ice hockey team will join WHEA companion Northeastern to participate in the Making Strides breast cancer research walk on Sunday, Oct. 15, at the Esplanade. Portions of ticket sales from Friday and Saturday’s game will be donated to the cause.
