BOSTON – The Boston University women’s basketball team (6-4), led by a team-high 18 points from senior tri-captain Katie Meinhardt, defeated cross-town foe Harvard University, 77-63, at Case Gym on Tuesday night. The Terriers shot 53 percent from beyond the 3-point arc, led by senior Erica Kovach and sophomore Kristi Dini, who were a combined 6-for-10.
Kovach scored in double digits, recording 16 points on 5-of-14 shooting, including 3-of-4 from three-point range. Sophomore Amarachi Umez-Eronini achieved a career high with 11 points.
As a team, the Terriers were 23-of-30 from the free throw line, and shot 46.9 percent from the field – their highest percentage since Nov. 21 at Northeastern.
After falling behind 8-2 within the first four minutes of the game, the Terriers began to chip away at the Crimson lead. Sophomore Christine Kinneary made back-to-back lay-ups at the 15 minute mark to put the Terriers ahead for the first time in the game, 13-11. Kinneary made the first lay-up, forced a steal, and hit another lay-up to quickly erase an 11-9 deficit. Kinneary, who had eight points, matched career highs for assists (7) and steals (3), while equaling a season-high five rebounds. For her efforts, Kinneary was named America East Player of the Game.
After Harvard tied the score at 13-13, Dini’s 3-pointer at 13:19 reclaimed the lead for the Terriers and they never relinquished it. Dini would hit three consecutive threes to put some distance between BU and the Crimson.
Harvard fought back within three points with 5:39 to go in the half, but the Terriers responded with an 8-0 run to up the score to 37-26, their largest lead of the half. Kinneary made a lay-up with four seconds remaining to round out the first-half scoring at 39-29.
After Harvard’s Christiana Lackner hit the first shot of the second half, freshman Aly Hinton made a lay-up and Kovach nailed a 3-pointer within a minute of each other to regain the Terriers' double-digit lead.
Harvard came as close as seven points at 13:21, however BU went on a 10-2 run to move the score to 61-48 with 9:02 remaining. BU closed out the game on an 8-2 run backed by Meinhardt’s 4-for-4 free throw shooting. Meinhardt hit 9-of-11 free throws for the game.
BU hosts its second consecutive home game on Sunday, Dec. 17, when St. John’s comes to The Roof at 1 p.m.
