BOSTON – The No. 21 Boston University women’s soccer team fell, 3-1, to the UMass Minutewomen (1-1-0) in Amherst, Mass., on Wednesday evening. Emily Pallotta (Andover, Mass.) scored the lone goal for the Terriers in the 11th minute off Marisha Schumacher-Hodge’s (Pittsburgh, Pa.) corner kick. The Terriers (1-1-0) return to action on Saturday, Sept. 2, at Princeton.
Christina Nunes scored the game-winning goal in the 38th minute, her first of the season. Jenny Roehrig took a free kick that found Nunes, who placed it in the top right corner. UMass extended their lead in the 52nd minute, when Sydney Stoll fired off a shot into the lower left corner. Britt Canfield and Nadia Villarroel assisted on the play.
“We started off well early on in the game with a number of quality chances,” said head coach Nancy Feldman. “After our goal, they countered and scored on their first opportunity. From that point on things started to go their way and we were fighting an uphill battle. After the third goal we started to play more with our backs against the wall, but they held on.”
BU got on the board early with the Pallotta goal in the 11th minute. Schumacher-Hodge stepped up to take the corner kick and sent the ball into the box where Pallotta was making a run to the far post and was able to head the ball into the net. However, UMass struck back a minute later with a goal by Vanessa Patry. From 10 yards out, Patry’s shot went off the far post and into the net.
Despite the loss, the Terriers out shot the Minutewomen 9-7 and earned six corner kicks. Pallotta and Lauren Erwin (Orange, Conn.) led BU with three shots apiece. Senior Stephanie Dreyer (New Rochelle, N.Y.) collected three saves.
The Terriers return to action on Saturday, Sept. 2, when they take on Princeton in Princeton, N.J., at 4 p.m.
