Terriers Advance to Patriot League Title Game After 4-0 Win Over Leopards
November 6, 2025 | Women's Soccer
BOSTON – Junior Ava Maguire scored two goals as part of a four-goal second half for the No. 1-seed Boston University women's soccer program, which advanced to the Patriot League championship game following a 4-0 victory over No. 5-seed Lafayette in the semifinal round on Thursday evening at Nickerson Field.
With the win, the Terriers will face No. 3-seed Army West Point in the Patriot League title game on Sunday (Nov. 9) at Nickerson Field for a noon kickoff.
BU (11-4-3, 7-1-1 PL) and Lafayette (5-8-7, 3-3-3 PL) both rattled off five shots in a scoreless first half. However, Maguire found the back of the net in the 56th minute to establish a lead the Terriers did not relinquish as BU's shutout streak climbed to seven matches.
Senior Margy Porta and sophomore Juliana Osterman also tallied goals. Senior Giulianna Gianino matched the single-game program record with three assists. Sophomores Alli Powderly and Olivia Avellar as well as freshman Georgia Prouty also posted assists. Goalkeeper Bridget Carr made three saves.
Leopard netminders Catherine Apker and Maddie Miniutti combined for seven stops. Heather Plowright recorded two shots.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Avellar fired the first shot of the game in the sixth minute from the top-right corner of the box, a right-footed poke that Apker swallowed up by the left post.
- In the 18th minute, both teams traded corner kicks. BU blocked a shot from April McDonald near the end line in front of Carr, then senior Mackenzie Stickelman lofted the Terriers' insert over the bar.
- Plowright sought the game's first goal in the 20th minute with a 25-yard blast that one-hopped to a crouching Carr.
- Moments before the end of the first half, Powderly raced up the back line with possession and flicked a shot that Apker collected to keep the match scoreless at the break.
- Gianino helped break the scoreless tie in the 56th minute after gaining possession at midfield and dishing off to Avellar, who advanced forward and placed an untouched through ball to Maguire on the left flank, leading to a left-footed strike past Apker.
- In the 68th minute, Powderly lofted the ball into the box for Gianino, who worked to her left with her back to the goal and poked the ball to an open Porta, who finished the play to make it 2-0.
- Prouty accelerated into Leopard territory less than three minutes later and passed to Gianino atop the box. Gianino drew multiple markers, leading to an open Maguire racing into the box from the right slot and burying a seven-foot shot into the nylon.
- Osterman sealed the game in the 87th minute when Lafayette's initial clear on a Prouty cross was unsuccessful. Osterman collected the loose ball and tucked home her second attempt at a shot near the penalty spot.
- BU finished the match with a 16-6 edge in shots. The Terriers outshot the Leopards in the second half, 11-1.
- Possession also favored the Terriers at 67 percent.
- Seven of the game's 10 combined corner kicks occurred in the opening 45 minutes.
- Neither team was issued a card.
- Carr as well as seniors Helene Tyburczy and Morgan Weaver played the full 90 minutes.
- Maguire is the third Terrier to record a brace this season. It is her first in the Scarlet & White.
- Gianino is the fifth Terrier in program history with three assists in a single game and the first to achieve the feat since her former teammate, Lily Matthews, did so on Oct. 21, 2023 against American.
- With the effort, she has set a new single-season assists record for the program with 14 assists. Those are the most assists by a Patriot League student-athlete in 19 years.
- Porta has notched 12 points in her last eight games. She has scored in a Patriot League semifinal match in consecutive seasons.
- Osterman has scored twice in her last three contests and three times in her last six.
- Carr and the Terrier defense have not allowed a goal in the last 643:26 of play at Nickerson Field and 656:24 overall.
- BU reaches its eighth Patriot League championship in 13 seasons as a league member.
- The Terriers improve to 12-1-2 all-time against Lafayette and 2-0 in the Patriot League Tournament.
- No. 1-seed BU clashes with No. 3-seed Army West Point with an automatic qualifier for the NCAA Tournament on the line in the championship game on Sunday (Nov. 9). Opening kick is set for noon.
- The game will air on CBS Sports Network.
