BOSTON – Down by one goal with under 20 minutes to play, the Boston University women's soccer program received scores from senior Kat Slott and sophomore Georgia Prouty in the final 17 minutes to hand the Terriers a 2-1 victory over Navy in the 2026 Patriot League opener on Saturday afternoon at Nickerson Field.

BU (4-5-1, 1-0-0 PL) leveled the score with Slott's tally in the 73rd minute as the Terriers overwhelmed the Midshipmen (7-4-1, 0-1-0 PL) with second-half possession. Slott's game-winning attempt hit the crossbar, but Prouty slotted home the rebound with 33 seconds to play in regulation.

Slott registered her team-leading fifth goal of the season on assists from juniors Olivia Avellar and Alli Powderly. Prouty notched her second score in 2026. Goalkeeper Bridget Carr made one save.

Chiara Cosenza found the back of the net for Navy off Stella Jones' feed in the 20th minute. The Mids accounted for seven total saves.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Terriers generated two free kicks just outside the box and a corner kick in the opening five minutes. Those opportunities created two shots from Avellar that were off target.
Both sides had dangerous opportunities starting at the 17th minute. On a BU corner kick, Navy's Natasha Stramrood leaped to deny senior Helene Tyburczy's shot in the box, then a Navy marker thwarted senior Ciara Kennedy's try on the rebound at the goal line. On the counter, Jessica Black closed in on Carr for a 1-on-1 chance, but fired her shot off the crossbar.
Navy did tally the game's first goal two minutes later. Following a midfield giveaway, Jones found Cosenza inside the box for a right-footed strike that found the upper-right corner of the goal.
Sophomore Nina Tzouganatos nearly found the equalizer on a 20-yard blast in the 23rd minute that zipped just above the woodwork.
In the 37th minute, junior Juliana Osterman lofted a shot by the upper-right corner of the 18-yard box that sailed over Stramrood, but was barely over the bar.
Avellar and Slott linked up for a header by the latter four yards from goal, but Stramrood lined up the chance for a save in the 63rd minute.
The Mids nearly regained the lead when Sophia Ryan burst down the left slot to poke a shot on goal. Carr dove to her left for the initial stop before sophomore Averie Hoff cleared away the loose ball with 22 minutes on the clock.
Slott found the equalizer in the 73rd minute. Powderly dished off to Avellar in front of BU's bench. The junior serviced the ball into the box near Slott and senior Samantha Aronson. Aronson drew attention to help Slott meet the ball, and the senior put enough velocity on the shot to prevent Stramrood from collecting cleanly.
Less than a minute, BU had four consecutive chances denied as Stramrood denied Prouty. Avellar, freshman Sam Ryan and Prouty then had three shots blocked.
In the 86th minute, senior Ava Maguire zipped towards the box after BU gained possession at midfield, whipping a shot towards the right post that Stramrood turned aside.
On the game-winning goal, Ryan crossed the ball to Slott for her header that ricocheted off the woodwork. Prouty collected and kept her composure to fire her second opportunity during the sequence into the nylon with 33 seconds on the timer.

STATS

BU finished with a 24-7 advantage in shots, which included a staggering 17-2 margin in the second half.
This also included a 9-2 edge in shots on goal for BU.
Corner kicks also favored the Terriers, 10-2.
Five Terriers played the full 90 minutes: Carr, Kennedy, Aronson, Ryan and sophomore Nina Tzouganatos.
Jones was the lone student-athlete to be issued a yellow card in the match, which came in the 58th minute.

NOTES

BU came back from a one-goal deficit to secure a win for the second time this year, also doing so in the 3-1 triumph vs. San Francisco on Aug. 30.
As of writing, Slott moved into a tie for first in the Patriot League with five goals on the year. She has scored in four of her last six appearances.
In tallying her first goal since Aug. 16 at UAlbany, Prouty is the fourth Terrier this year to score multiple goals. The Terriers are 7-0-1 since last year when Prouty registers a point.
Avellar has 10 points in her last 10 Patriot League regular season matches.
Powderly collected her first point since the Patriot League semifinal contest against Lafayette on Nov. 6, 2025.
BU recorded its first win in a Patriot League opener since 2022. Since Oct. 16, 2024, the Terriers are 11-1-2 in their last 15 conference regular season games.
The Terriers improve to 11-4-1 in the all-time series vs. Navy.
