BALTIMORE, Md. – The Boston University men’s soccer team (5-1-4, 0-0-1 America East) came back from a 1-0 deficit to tie the UMBC Retrievers (3-5-2, 0-0-1 AE), 1-1, in the first conference action of the season in Baltimore, Md., on Saturday afternoon.
While both teams played conservatively throughout most of the first half, UMBC struck first in the 38th minute when forward Dan Maudslay retrieved the ball at the top of the box. Maudslay chipped it down the left flank to forward Andrew Gillis whose shot from nine yards out found the back of the net. In the waning minutes of the first half, BU got two shots off that hit the post leaving UMBC with the 1-0 halftime lead.
Playing up a man in the second half, the Terriers capitalized at 78:41. Freshman Samuel Appiah (Obuasi, Ghana)started the counter attack and his give-and-go with Jin Oh (Dededo, Guam) left Appiah inside the box with UMBC netminder Steve King. Appiah’s blast from eight yards out was his second of the season.
UMBC had the best chance in overtime but forward Andrew Gillis’ shot went wide on the right side.
BU held the 19-4 advantage in shots, putting five shots on frame, and both teams earned four corner kicks. Sophomore Neil Hlavaty (Lombard, Ill) had a game-high six shots. Senior goalkeeper Zach Riffett (Brenham, Texas) made one save in 110 minutes.
