BOSTON – The Boston University softball team and head coach Shawn Rychcik have announced the 2007 softball schedule. The Terriers will face seven teams that made appearances in the 2006 NCAA Tournament and at least two contests against Atlantic Coast Conference opponents, two Big East foes and three Atlantic 10 teams.
The schedule is highlighted by contests against seven NCAA Tournament teams from 2006 as the Terriers will face Georgia Southern (March 2), Iowa (March 2), North Carolina (March 13), Princeton (March 16), Indiana (March 17), UMass (April 26) and two-time America East champion Albany. UMass went deeper into the Tournament than any other team on BU’s 2007 schedule, as the Minutewomen qualified for the NCAA Super Regionals.
Georgia Southern fell to in-state foe Georgia in the Athens Regional and finished with a 35-35 record. Indiana made its first appearance in an NCAA Tournament in six years last season, while North Carolina ended with a 48-19 record in the NCAA regional elimination game. Princeton completed the season with its 16th Ivy League title and a 34-19 overall record and Iowa was 39-22 and an NCAA regional qualifier.
The Terriers will open their season at the Central Florida Tournament against George Mason on Feb. 23 in Orlando, Fla. In the tournament, BU will face host UCF on Feb. 23, and Villanova and Alabama State the next day. On the third and final day of the tournament, BU will get an early look at America East foe Albany, on Feb. 25.
BU will continue its season-opening road trips through mid-March with tournaments in Marietta, Ga., at the Georgia Tech Buzz Classic, and in Tampa, Fla., versus St. Joseph’s, UNC, Buffalo, Princeton and Indiana.
On March 22, the Terriers will host their home opener against cross-town rival Boston College at 3 p.m., before facing off against Central Connecticut State on March 24 and URI on March 25 in New Britain Conn., and Kingston, R.I., respectively. BU will close out the main part of its non-conference schedule with local foe Harvard on March 29.
On March 31, the Terriers will delve into conference action with a doubleheader versus Albany at BU’s Softball Field. BU will face four non-conference teams during March and April when it hosts UConn on April 4 and travels to Brown on April 12, Boston College on April 17 and UMass on April 26.
The 2007 softball program will aim to capture its seventh America East title and first since 2003. Last season, the Terriers made a run deep into the America East Tournament, losing in the title game to Albany, 5-2. BU was 29-29 in 2006 and returns 12 student-athletes.
