Softball Homers Past Harvard in 11-6 Comeback Victory
April 14, 2026 | Softball
Three juniors in Kylie Doherty, Kyomi Apalit and Sophie Naivar all went yard along with senior Megan Coyle to help the Terriers (34-11) plate eight unanswered runs and extend their win streak to eight games. After allowing two runs in the second as BU's third pitcher of the game, sophomore Ava Johnson (1-1) bounced back to pitch three scoreless innings for her first win of the season with senior Kasey Ricard recording the final four outs for the save.
Six Terriers collected two hits apiece with senior Brooke Deppiesse and sophomore Camryn Lyons joining the previously four mentioned hitters in combining for 12 hits. Naivar also added three walks, while sophomore Kieren McHugh earned two. Lyons led BU with three runs scored.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- After starting the game with a single to left center, Deppiesse advanced to second on sophomore Kieren McHugh's walk and scored on Lyons' RBI single to right center.
- The two sophomores next pulled off a double steal for the second run, and Niavar delivered an RBI double to center for the 3-0 advantage.
- Despite having two outs, Harvard struck back during the bottom half with four runs off four hits and a pair of walks against sophomore Danika Nell, senior Haley Ganino and sophomore Ava Johnson, who first allowed a bases-loaded walk and then prevented further damage with a fly out to left.
- Harvard added two more runs in the second with three straight hits, including a two-RBI double to right center to pull ahead, 6-3.
- With two outs in the top of the third, Apalit lainched a 1-0 pitch to left.
- After Johnson quickly retired the side in the bottom half, Doherty earned a two-run homer in the fourth and Lyons scored the go-ahead run with the help of a wild pitch.
- The Terriers loaded the bases in the fifth with two outs but ended up grounding out to second with a 7-6 lead.
- Naivar and Coyle extended the lead to 9-6 with back-to-back solo homers.
- Harvard tried to mount a rally in the sixth with a two-out single and walk, but the defense was able to catch a Harvard runner well past second to keep the 9-6 lead.
- BU added two more runs in the top of the seventh thanks to RBI doubles from Apalit and Coyle.
- After allowing a one-out double, Ricard sealed the victory with a fly out to center and a game-ending strikeout looking.
- The Terriers have totaled eight homers over the last two games, just two fewer than the total earned by the 2016 squad on its way to the NCAA tournament during head coach Ashley Waters' first season at the helm. Waters just needs three more wins to reach 400 career victories at BU.
- BU's 47 total homers this season rank third most in program history, one behind the 2010 squad and 18 away from tying the 2007 team's record.
- With her third homer over the last three days, Doherty now owns a PL record 19 homers this season and a PL record-tying 39 career homers alongside Colgate's Dorothy Donaldson ('05).
- Ricard moved up to third in the PL record book at nine career saves, three fewer than the No. 2 slot occupied by Army's Ashlie Christian ('04).
- The Terriers will next visit Providence on Wednesday (April 15) for a 3 p.m. first pitch.
- BU leads the all-time series, 27-17-2, after rallying from a two-run deficit twice last Wednesday for an 8-7 home win.
- With the one-run victory, the Terriers were able to avenge a 3-2 road loss in 2025 that saw the Friars score all three runs in the bottom of the seventh.
