BOSTON - Behind two goals from freshman Aaron O'Neal (Virginia Beach, Va.), the Boston University men's soccer team (6-5-0, 1-1-0 AE) picked up its first America East conference victory of the season, defeating Maine (2-8-1, 0-1-1 AE), 2-0, on Wednesday evening at Nickerson Field.
The freshman forward accounted for all of the scoring in the game, picking up his fourth and fifth goals of the year. He and junior Neil Hlavaty (Lombard, Ill.) pelted the Black Bears' Nemanja Kostic with three rapid shots in the 42nd minute, and O'Neal picked up the rebound off his own shot, sending it past Maine's keeper to put the Terriers up 1-0 going into the half.
O'Neal added an insurance goal at 53:20 when he received a feed from junior Jin Oh (Dededo, Guam) deep on the left side and put the ball in the back of the net past Maine's Giacomo Brunino. This marks O'Neal's first multiple goal game, and he now leads the Terriers in scoring with five goals and one assist for 11 points.
BU commanded the offense, out-shooting the Black Bears 15-4 and holding an 8-1 advantage in corner kicks. Maine's goalies combined to make eight saves for the game, while Terrier red-shirt sophomore Joe Cullaro (New York, N.Y.) made three stops and earned a shutout in his first career start.
Next up, the Terriers take a break from conference action to host Big Ten opponent Penn State on Saturday, Oct. 13 at 2 p.m. on Nickerson Field.
