BOSTON - The Boston University men's soccer team will try and take the lead in the all-time series with Stony Brook when the Terriers host the Seawolves on Saturday, Oct. 20 at 1 p.m. on Nickerson Field. BU and SBU are tied 3-3-0 since 2001.
Boston University (7-5-1, 1-1-1 America East) tied Albany in its last time out on Nov. 17. The teams played to a scoreless tie in the first half before the Great Danes got on the board in the 68th minute. Senior co-captain and defender Derek Puerta scored his first goal of the season and just the second of his career when he buried a pass from junior Neil Hlavaty (Lombard, Ill.) on a corner kick in the 71st minute.
Freshman Aaron O'Neal (Virginia Beach, Va.) leads BU in scoring with five goals and three assists for 13 points. Red-shirt sophomore Joe Cullaro (New York, N.Y.) has taken over for injured classmate Hrafn Davidsson (Reykjavik, Iceland). Cullaro has recorded two shutouts in his three starts this year and has a goals against average (GAA) of 0.60 and a save percentage of .750 through five games.
Stony Brook (7-5-1, 1-2-1 AE) is coming off a double overtime 1-0 loss to New Hampshire last Wednesday. Four of SBU's last five games have required at least one overtime. Despite out-shooting opponents 192-144, the Seawolves are tied with their foes in total goals, 18-18. Michael Palacio's and Mahamadou Simpara's four goals apiece tie them for the team lead. Palacio is SBU's assist-leader as well, with six helpers. Dawid Ditrich is Stony Brook's starting goalie and he has recorded a GAA of 0.97 and a save percentage of .739.
The all-time series dates back to a 6-1 win by Boston University in 2001. The Terriers won three of the first four games played, but Stony Brook is currently on a two-game win streak. In the last meeting between the teams, the Seawolves pulled out a 1-0 home win.
The Terriers will have a promotion from Dunkin Donuts prior to the game on Saturday. Just past the main entrance to the field, spectators can pick up free coffee, hot chocolate and donuts from BU staff members.
Boston University plays its last road game of the month on Wednesday, Oct. 24 at Hartford at 6 p.m.
