BOSTON - The Boston University men's soccer team will look to close out the home regular season with a win against New Hampshire on Wednesday, Oct. 31 at 7 p.m. on Nickerson Field. Seniors Derek Puerta (Pawtucket, R.I.) and Paul Mignogna (Tarrytown, N.Y.) will be honored in a brief pre-game ceremony.
BU (9-5-2, 3-1-2 America East) moved into second place in the league last week, tying Hartford 1-1 and defeating then-conference leading UMBC 2-1. Junior Neil Hlavaty (Lombard, Ill.) and freshman Aaron O'Neal (Virginia Beach, Va.) earned Player and Rookie of the Week, respectively, as the Terriers swept the weekly conference awards. Hlavaty notched BU's game-winning goal against the Retrievers, while O'Neal scored the equalizer against the Hawks that kept BU in the game and assisted on BU's first tally against UMBC.
O'Neal leads the Terriers in scoring with six goals and four assists for 16 points. He is second in the conference in points per game (1.00) and goals per game (0.38). Hlavaty is second the team in assists (6) and tied for first in the America in assists per game, with 0.38. Sophomore Hrafn Davidsson (Reykjavik, Iceland) returned from a five-game layoff due to injury in the Terriers' last outing against UMBC. Davidsson has an overall record of 6-5-0, a goals against average (GAA) of 1.09 and a save percentage of .815.
The Wildcats (5-4-5, 2-1-1 AE) stunned conference-leading Binghamton in their last outing, downing the Bearcats 1-0 on Wednesday, Oct. 24. Chris Banks, one of three UNH players tied with a team-leading two goals, knocked in the game-winner. A.J. Dubois, who provided the assist on Banks' goal, and Kyle Urso are the other two Wildcats with two goals. UNH's Mike Jenne has started all 13 games played in net and has an overall record of 3-4-6, a GAA of 0.83 and a save percentage of .797.
The series between the teams dates from 1966, and Boston University holds the all-time advantage, 21-16-7. The Terriers dominated from the early `80s to the early `90s, winning all 12 games played between 1983 and 1993. The series has been more even since. BU is just 5-4-5 since 1994 and has played five overtime matches with UNH in that span with all of them ending in ties.
