BOSTON - The Boston University men's soccer team received an at-large bid to the 2007 NCAA tournament, it was announced this evening by the NCAA. The Terriers will travel across the state to face Massachusetts at noon on Friday, Nov. 23. If they advance, they will face top-ranked Boston College in the second round on Nov. 28 in Newton, Mass.
BU (9-6-4), which lost to the Minutemen 1-0 on September 29, earned the bid in large part to its non-conference schedule. The Terriers faced five teams in the Top 20 of the RPI and dealt No. 6 Brown its only loss of the season October 2.
This is BU's first trip to the NCAA since 2004, when the Terriers won the America East championship and earned the conference's automatic bid to the post-season. That year, Boston University tied Dartmouth, 2-2, and advanced past the Big Green on penalty kicks, 4-3. The Terriers lost to St. John's in the second round, 3-1.
This will be BU's 12th trip to the NCAA tournament, but the Terriers have never managed to advance past the second round which they have reached in four of their prior nine trips.
The teams will be vying for the right to compete at the 2007 NCAA Men's College Cup December 14 and 16 in Cary, North Carolina, at SAS Soccer Park. North Carolina State University, the Capital Area Soccer League and the Town of Cary will host the championship.
