BOSTON - The final regular season game has big implications for the Boston University men's soccer team (9-5-3, 3-1-3 America East) as the Terriers travel to play Vermont (6-9-2, 3-2-2 AE) in Burlington, Vt. on Saturday, Nov. 3 at 1 p.m. If BU records a win, the Terriers will secure at least second place in the league and a first-round bye in the America East tournament.
A BU win combined with a Binghamton loss would give the Terriers the regular-season conference title.
BU held onto second place in the league with a scoreless draw against New Hampshire on Wednesday, Oct. 31. The Terriers had a good scoring chance in the 40th minute when sophomore Andrej Bjegovic's (St. Germain en Laye, France) header hit the crossbar.
Freshman Aaron O'Neal (Virginia Beach, Va.) leads the Terriers in scoring with six goals and four assists for 16 points. Junior Neil Hlavaty (Lombard, Ill.) is second the team in assists (6) and tied for second in points (12) with sophomore Shaun Taylor (Sandown, England). Sophomore Hrafn Davidsson (Reykjavik, Iceland) has returned from a five-game layoff due to injury. He has an overall record of 6-5-1, a goals against average (GAA) of 0.98 and a save percentage of .821.
The Catamounts handed league-leading Binghamton a 2-0 loss last Wednesday. UVM got early goals from Jordan Crasilneck and T.J. Gore, and the Catamounts' defense stood up to give Vermont the win and third place in the conference standings. Gore leads the team with three goals and one assist for seven points. Three Catamounts have two goals apiece. Goalie Roger Scully has a GAA of 0.71 and a save percentage of .820.
Boston University holds a 22-9-6 advantage in the all-time series, and head coach Neil Roberts is 16-3-5 in his career at BU against Vermont. The Terriers have gone on a run the last 16 years, not losing a game from 1991 to 2002 and winning 15 of 17 games. Three of the last four matches have resulted in double overtime - BU has a 2-0-2 record in those games. Throughout the 35-year rivalry, nine contests have gone into at least one overtime.
The first round of the America East tournament takes place on Saturday, Nov. 10. If the Terriers get the bye, they will play on Wednesday, Nov. 14.
