BOSTON - Head coach Kelly Greenberg and the Boston University women's basketball program are pleased to announce the signing of three student-athletes for the 2008-09 season. Alex Young, Caroline Stewart and Kasie Carbacio will join the Terriers next year.
"We are excited to welcome Alex, Caroline, and Kasie into the Boston University Basketball family," said assistant coach Michael Leflar. "All three will be great additions to Terrier Basketball on and off the court. Their shared toughness and passion for the game are things that stood out during the recruiting process."
Alex Young (Hickory, N.C./St. Stephen's High School)
A 5-9 guard out of Hickory, N.C., Young comes to BU following an already prolific career at St. Stephen's High School. She is a three-time all-conference and all-region team member and earned the distinction as her conference's Player of the Year as a junior. She helped guide her high school squad to the state playoffs all three season, after leading the team in scoring in those campaigns. As a junior, Young averaged 16.4 points per game and 7.1 rpg. In three seasons, her team has compiled an impressive 58-23 overall record for a 71.6 winning percentage. Already a 1,000-point scorer, Young is currently averaging 22.3 ppg in her senior year.
"Alex is someone who can really score from either guard position," continued Leflar. "She has a high basketball IQ that is matched with great aggressiveness on the offensive end. We expect Alex to thrive from the moment she steps on campus playing in our up tempo system."
Caroline Stewart (Topsfield, Mass./Masconomet Regional High School)
A local product out of Topsfield, Mass., Caroline Stewart comes to BU following a decorated career at Masconomet Regional, where the 6-0 forward was a two-time Boston Herald All-Scholastic and Cape Ann All-League honoree. In her final season at Masconomet, Stewart is a McDonald's All-American nominee and Wendy's Heisman Award candidate. Along the way, Stewart has garnered numerous local honors that include the Salem Evening News' Rookie of the Year in 2006 and Player of the Year accolades as a sophomore. The past two seasons the paper has also recognized her as an all-star team member.
"Caroline will bring strength and athleticism to the forward position for us," said Leflar. "She can score and defend both on the perimeter and in the post. I expect her to set herself apart as our state's best high school senior this season. Keeping Massachusetts' best players close to home is a goal of ours."
Kasie Carbacio (Bridgeport, W.Va./Bridgeport High School)
Carbacio has led her team to three consecutive undefeated seasons in conference play, as well as winning the county championship in those campaigns. The 5-8 guard led her high school squad in rebounding, culminating with a remarkable 10.6 rpg as a junior. Carbacio is a McDonald's All-American nominee this season. She averaged 12.0 ppg, 10.6 rpg, 3.8 apg and 3.7 spg as a junior. A multi-sports athlete, Carbacio has earned all-county, all-conference and all-state in both basketball and volleyball.
"When I think of Kasie, I think of someone who is a jack of all trades on the basketball court," concluded Leflar. "From the guard position she is someone who can score as well as rebound and defend and that speaks to her toughness. Kasie has been asked to do a lot for her high school team this season, and I think that will really prepare her to succeed at the guard position for us next year."
