BOSTON - Boston University head softball coach Shawn Rychcik announced the signing of two student-athletes for the 2009 season today. Erica Casacci and Emily Roesch hail from Florida and played together on the same club team, which qualified for the prestigious American Softball Association (ASA) Gold Nationals in 2006 and 2007.
Casacci of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., plays high school softball for St. Thomas Aquinas where she has been a starter for the past three seasons and the team's leadoff hitter as a sophomore and junior. She is a two-time Miami Herald All-Broward County First Team member and was an honorable mention as a freshman. For her high school team, Casacci hit .352 with 17 RBI in 2007 and led the squad in runs (24) and stolen bases (17-for-17). She earned a sterling .990 field percentage - one error - at second base. In addition to her high school accolades, she also played alongside fellow signee Roesch on the nationally renowned Lady Gators Gold team, coached by Eric Call, and hit .353 in 2007. Casacci is a member of the National Honors Society and a Principal's Honors student all four years. Casacci chose BU over Fairfield and South Carolina.
"Erica will bring remarkable speed and athleticism to BU, while possessing the ability to play in the infield and outfield," said Rychcik. "Her quickness on the base paths will put tremendous pressure on opposing defenses."
Roesch, a shortstop, earned Palm Beach Post's All-County First Team honors as a junior, after making the second team as a sophomore and receiving honorable mention status as a freshman. At Palm Beach Gardens High School, her squad was the 6A state champions in her freshman and sophomore campaigns. Roesch will serve as a team captain this upcoming season. In addition to her athletic accomplishments, Roesch is a three-time Softball Scholar Athlete and a member of the National and Science Honor Society. Roesch chose BU over NC State, South Carolina, Central Florida and North Florida.
"Emily comes to BU as a five-tool threat. She has a strong arm, great speed and will hit for power and average," said Rychcik. "Her potential here at BU is unlimited because of her size and ability."
