Swimming and Diving Sweeps Maine

BOSTON - The Boston University men's and women's swimming and diving teams swept Maine on Saturday afternoon at Competition Pool. The women won by a 186-112 margin, while the men earned 185 points to Maine's 110. Christina Ruggiero picked up two individual wins for the women, while Tess Waresmith and Andre Watson led the men's and women's divers to a sweep of the one- and three-meter boards. Both squads won 13-of-16 events, respectively.
The women's team took an early win in the 200-medley relay event as Sarah Doersam, Kirsten Tullis, Brigette O'Shaughnessy and Eve Kinsella swam to a winning time of one minute, 50.91 seconds.
Christina Ruggiero continued her dominance of the distance events with a winning time of 10:26.51 in the 1000 free. Clara Van Allen and Liisa Young picked up crucial points with second- and fourth-place finishes in the event with times of 10:40.19 10:46.43, respectively. Ruggiero later switched gears to the sprints and earned a win in the 50 free with a time of 25.31. Maria McIntyre earned second place in the event with a time of 25.33.
O'Shaughnessy kept the winning streak alive with a first-place finish in the 200 free (1:57.82) - nearly four seconds ahead of her closest competitor. Joanna Weinstein and Sarah Doersam combined for first and second in the 200 fly. Weinstein's time of 2:08.38 was her fastest of the year. O'Shaughnessy picked up her second individual win in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:25.40.
Emily Munday and McIntyre took first and second, respectively, in the 100 free to further extend the Terriers' lead. Eve Kinsella earned her first individual win of the day with a winning time of 5:07.56 in the 500 free.
In the diving events, both the men's and women's divers swept the top two spots. Tess Waresmith continued to dominate the boards with a win on the one-meter with 289.65 points, while Alex Crerar took second with 255.15 points. Later, on the three-meter, Waresmith and Crerar banded together again to take first and second. On the men's side, Andre Watson won the one-meter with a score of 362.18, while Tanner Knorr placed second with 288.15 points. Watson also picked up another nine points for the men's team with a score of 337.35 on the three-meter.
On the men's side, Eric Carlson led off with Arik Seiler, Bryon Kallert and Matt Rickett swimming to first place with a time of 1:39.35. Mark Nakanishi, Greg Dierksen and Nate Everett swept the top three spots in the 1000 free. Nakanishi clocked with a winning time of 9:56.44, while Dierksen and Everett touched the wall in 10:06.46 and 10:35.28, respectively. Nakanishi later swam a season-best in the 100 fly with a winning time of 53.38.
Kyle Ernst, Rickett and Peter Lo swept first, second and third in the 200 free to extend the Terriers' advantage. Bryon Kallert, Brett Burgs and Brett McKenzie combined for 16 points in the 100 back. Carlson won his first individual meet of the day - second overall - in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 59.08 - the fastest time by a Terrier this season in the event.
Tyson Slesnick claimed top honors in the 200 fly with a time of 1:58.20. Kyle Berg earned his first individual win of the meet with a time of 2:00.75 in the 200 back - his fastest time of the season by nearly five seconds.
Lo and Everett went 1-2 in the 200 breast. Arik Seiler was victorious in the 500 free with a time of 4:45.69. Seiler later swam the fastest time by a Terrier in the 200 IM, clocking in with a winning time of 1:58.67. He was followed by Berg (2:04.09).
The Terriers return to the pool on Jan. 12 when they travel to Hanover, N.H., to square off with Dartmouth at 1:00 p.m.
