
Russell, Kearns Named Co-Captains at Annual Ice Hockey Banquet

BOSTON – The Boston University women’s ice hockey team officially closed out the 2006-07 season on Saturday afternoon at the George Sherman Union with the team’s annual banquet. Sophomore Sarah Russell was elected by her team to join fellow sophomore Gina Kearns as co-captain for the 2007-08 year, while sophomore Erin Seman was voted the most valuable player.
Russell was also honored with the Friends of Hockey Award, given to annually to the unsung hero. Last season, Russell was a co-recipient of the honor. Sophomore Caroline Bourdeau was also a repeat winner, earning the Spirit Award for the second time.
Senior Jessica Lortie was honored during the day as well, earning the Strength and Conditioning Athlete of the Year award, and sophomore Genevieve Laing was presented the Academic Honors Award.
Assistant coach Erika Silva presented freshman goaltender Melissa Haber with the Most Improved Player award. Haber ended the season with an overall record of 9-3-2, a save percentage of .910, a goals against average of 2.12, and four shutouts.
The awards presentation was closed out with Seman receiving team MVP. Seman ended the year with 31 points, leading the team in goals (19), power-play goals (8), game-winning goals (6), shots (114) and shot percentage (.167). Seman scored the first overtime goal in program history for the Terriers on Oct. 13 against RPI, and closed out the season with the first hat trick against Northeastern on Feb. 24.
The 2006-07 squad posted an impressive 19-12-3 overall record and 10-9-2 conference mark, making it to the Beanpot championship game for the first time since 1982.
