BOSTON - The Boston University men's soccer team will look to extend its two-game conference win streak to three when the Terriers (5-5-2, 2-1 AE) visit Maine (3-6-2, 0-2-1 AE) on Wednesday for a 3 p.m. start time.
After losing its first America East game against Albany, BU rebounded last week with two shutout victories, first a 1-0 win at Stony Brook followed by a 2-0 win at home against Binghamton. Reigning AE Rookie of the Week Michael Bustamante was the star as he scored his first career game-winning goal against the Seawolves and then assisted on both scores against the Bearcats.
The freshman forward is currently tied for fourth in the league with five assists. Sophomore Aaron O'Neal is tied for second with six, while junior Shaun Taylor is tied for second in the goals scored category with six. Taylor leads the Terriers in points with 13 total, followed by Bustamante's nine points.
On the defensive front, senior Hrafn Davidsson earned a complete shutout against Binghamton with one save and then combined for five with junior Joe Cullaro at Stony Brook. The Terriers have now shut out five opponents this season. Davidsson currently holds a 1.11 goals against average (GAA) and a .729 save percentage.
The Black Bears have yet to lose a game at home, recording 0-0 draws with Northeastern and UMBC while also defeating Bryant University, 4-0. Last week, they dropped road contests at New Hampshire (1-0) and Hartford (2-0). Junior Nikola Bogdanovic leads the team in points with two goals and three assists. Junior Nemanja Kostic has started eight games at goal and has a 0.84 GAA with a .830 save percentage.
BU leads Maine, 29-3-4, in the all-time series that dates back to 1972. Last season at Nickerson Field, O'Neal scored two goals, while Cullaro made three stops for the shutout in his first career start. In 2006 at Maine, Jin Oh and Neil Hlavaty each scored a pair of goals with classmate Dan Schultz another one for the 5-0 victory. Davidsson and Cullaro combined with Zach Riffett for the shutout.
Up next for BU is a trip to New Hampshire on Saturday (Oct. 18).
