BOSTON - Head coach Kelly Greenberg and the Boston University women's basketball team are pleased to announce the signing of five student-athletes, who will suit up for the Terriers in 2009-10. Chantell Alford, Deven Green, Jacqueline Kuczynski, Caitlynn Moran and Kristen Sims represent the class of 2013 - BU's largest since in the 2005-06 season.
"We are very excited to welcome our five incoming players to Boston University and our basketball program," said assistant coach Michael Leflar. "The incoming class fills every position which will give us great depth, and all five really understand how to play the game. Just as important, each one has the ability to contribute right away."
Heading into her senior year, Chantell Alford has already established herself as an accomplished guard at Wilbur Cross High School, where she is a two-time All-Oronoque Division selection and a New Haven Register All-Sate Third Team honoree as a junior. The 5-8 West Haven, Conn., native also earned Van Guard All-Star honors in her sophomore and junior campaigns.
"Chantell is going to add size and athleticism at the guard position," said Leflar. "She can score in different ways and I think she is going to really excel in our up tempo style of play."
Deven Green, a 5-11 forward from Germantown, Md., will add depth to the Terriers' frontcourt after decorated career at Northwest High School, where she is a McDonald's All-America nominee and the team's leading scorer and rebounder. In addition she is a three-time all-county and all-league honoree as well as a 1,000-point scorer.
"Deven is a forward with great hands and a soft touch around the basket," said Leflar. "She has a real presence in the post, and that is going to help us on both ends of the floor."
A native of Springfield, N.J., Jacqueline Kuczynski is a two-time all-county honoree heading into her senior year at Jonathan Dayton High School and has already surpassed 1,500 career points in three full seasons. At Jonathan Dayton, the 6-1 forward has served as a captain over the past two seasons in addition to leading the county in scoring since her freshman campaign. Kuczynski helped lead her NJ Crusaders AAU team to a 15U New Jersey state championship as a sophomore and later went on to place in the top 16 at the national level.
"Jac really runs the floor and has great athleticism," said Leflar. "She can score inside and out and we see her really thriving here."
Adding depth to the Terriers' traditionally strong backcourt is Caitlynn Moran, a 5-8 guard out of Hopewell Junction, N.Y. Moran is a three-time all-league selection and three-time all-section honoree at John Jay High School where she eclipsed the 1,000-point plateau in her junior season.
"Caitlynn is a scoring point guard who will help us continue to play a very up-tempo style," added Leflar. "Along with her ability to score, she has a great overall feel for the game which is important for someone in her position."
A 5-9 guard hailing from Richmond, Va., Kristen Sims was a second-team all-district honoree as well as the team's MVP. In her freshman campaign, her Clover Hill High School squad was the district and regional championships and went on to place third at the state level.
"Kristen has size and can really score," added Leflar. "Overall, I think she is someone who will be able to impact the game in a lot of different ways."
