BOSTON - After receiving the National Soccer Coaches Association of America's (NSCAA) first-team All-Northeast Region honors, Boston University men's soccer senior captain Dan Schultz was named to the organization's Scholar All-America team on Tuesday. In November, the Cincinnati, Ohio native had received his first national academic award of the season from ESPN The Magazine and CoSIDA.
Majoring in economics, the defender played a critical role in the Terriers' success this season, anchoring a backline that helped shut out 10 opponents and allow just four goals during BU's 10-game unbeaten streak. Also the lone captain on the team, Schulz became the first Terrier since Ola Olsen in 1994 to be recognized nationally for his effort not only on the field but in the classroom.
His play led the America East regular season and conference tournament champion to finish the year ranked 25th in the final CollegeSoccerNews.com poll of the year and with a RPI ranking of 20, it's highest finish of the decade.
To be nominated, a student-athlete, who is a junior or above in academic standing at the current institution, must have at least a 3.30 cumulative grade point average - on a 4.0 scale - throughout his or her career. The student-athlete must also start more than 50 percent of all games and be a significant contributor to the team.
