Game One | Game Two
BOSTON -
The Boston University softball team (28-17, 14-3 AE) claimed a pair of wins over Binghamton (6-32, 1-16 AE) on Saturday afternoon at BU Softball Field. In the first game, BU won by a 2-1 margin and in game two claimed a commanding 13-2 victory. Sophomore hurlers Cassidi Hardy and Megan Currier earned the victories in the circle, and junior Christy Leath drove in a pair of runs and drew her 29th walk of the season to break a single-season school record. Freshman Melanie Delgado led the offense with 3-for-4 hitting and two RBI.
Six different Terriers drove in a pair of runs through two games on Saturday. Senior Molly Gallagher and junior Melissa Dubay smashed home runs in the second game, while junior Brooke Hudson was 3-for-5 with a triple and two RBI.
In game one, Hardy threw a gem striking out 13 batters - a season high - and issuing three walks and surrendering just one run to improve to 13-5 overall. In the second contest, Currier went the distance with two runs - one earned - three walks and three strikeouts as she picked up her eighth win of the season.
In game one and on just the third at-bat, BU jumped ahead of the Bearcats with an RBI single down the left line by Leath. But in the top of the third, Binghamton knotted the score at one with a stand-up double to right field that brought home the tying run from first base.
The Terriers loaded the bases in the fourth and Setterlund drew the walk to score Hudson and reclaim the lead for good, 2-1. In the sixth, Hardy closed out the game with three straight strikeouts to secure the victory.
In game two, the Bearcats struck first with a run on a single down the left line and then added to the lead on another single into left field; however, in the bottom half of the frame junior Shayne Lotito doubled into center field to score Setterlund. BU scored three more in the inning, taking advantage of three passed balls in the frame, as Leath and sophomore Rachel Hebert drove in runs.
In the third, the Bearcats loaded the bases on a walk and back-to-back singles, but the Terriers held them with a play at home plate and a called strikeout to end the frame. Hebert tacked on one more with a double to right center that plated Dubay in the third and on the next at-bat Hudson brought her home with an RBI single up the middle. Setterlund drove in the Terriers' eighth run of the game with a single up the middle.
In the bottom of the fourth, Dubay led off with a first-pitch home run to center field and Hudson nailed a triple to right center to up the lead to 10-2. Delgado then drove in Hudson with an RBI single to center field and Gallagher smashed a long ball to left field to round out the scoring at 13-2.
The Terriers and Bearcats will square off in the season-series finale on Sunday at noon. In a pre-game ceremony, BU will honor its two seniors.
