BOSTON - Nine different Terriers drove in runs on Sunday afternoon as the Boston University softball team defeated Binghamton, 9-0, to sweep the series at BU Softball Field. Junior Shayne Lotito blasted the game-winning home run in the first, while sophomore hurler Cassidi Hardy improved to 14-5 overall with a complete-game effort. She struck out three batters and allowed just two hits in the shutout. BU improves to 29-17 overall and 15-3 in the America East, while Binghamton falls to 6-33 overall and 1-17 in the conference.
BU pounded out 10 hits in the victory, while its defense was just as strong turning two double plays during the contest. Junior Melissa Dubay led with two hits in three at-bats, while freshmen April Setterlund and Melanie Delgado both hit doubles.
Lotito's blast to left center gave the Terriers the early 1-0 advantage and in the top of the next frame, Hardy got herself out of a bases-loaded jam by forcing a ground out to first. In the bottom of the second, senior Molly Gallagher tacked one more with a sacrifice bunt, and classmate Tyler Benson followed up with an RBI single up the middle.
Sophomore Rachel Hebert drove in another run in the third with a single that plated junior Christy Leath. On the same play, Dubay escaped a rundown and on the next at-bat scored on a fly out to left field.
In the fourth, three more runs crossed the plate, as Leath, Dubay and junior Megan Coughlin recorded RBI, and Hardy struck out one and forced two ground outs to secure the victory.
BU will travel to Harvard on Thursday at 4:00 p.m. before heading to Albany for the regular-season finale. The Terriers and Great Danes will face off on Saturday in a crucial series that will determine the regular-season champion and top seed in the America East tournament.
