COLUMBIA, S.C. - The Boston University women's soccer team dropped a hard-fought match to South Carolina, 1-0, on Sunday evening as the Gamecocks scored the game-winning goal in the second half and held off the Terriers' offensive pressure for the remainder of the contest. BU fell to 1-2-0 on the young season, while South Carolina improved to 2-0-1 overall.
South Carolina scored the decisive goal in the 56th minute when Kim Miller sent a cross inside the box from the right side and Lindsay Small got on the end of it for her first goal of the season.
The Gamecocks held the slight 12-10 advantage in shots; however, BU put six strikes on frame, including two in the final ten minutes of the game. Sophomore goalkeeper Janie Reilly finished with three saves.
In the first half, neither team was able to convert on their shot attempts with the Gamecocks holding the slight 5-4 edge. BU did put two strikes on frame as senior Marisha Schumacher-Hodge forced South Carolina's Mollie Patton to come up with the stops.
To start the second half South Carolina came out with three quick shots and broke through at 55:50 with Small's goal. Junior Mara Osher and sophomore Shauna Kelleher tested Patton in the 63rd and 67th minute with shots on goal, as the two Terriers tried to swing the momentum in BU's favor. Kelleher continued to get inside the defense with another shot two minutes later, but her attempt went just wide right. Sophomore Casey Brown and Corie Halasz pressured Patton in the final ten minutes of the contest, but the keeper made the stops to maintain the shutout.
BU will travel next to Princeton on Friday, Sept. 5 for a 5:00 p.m. kick off.
