
Terriers Set to Face St. John's on Saturday

BOSTON - The Boston University women's basketball team (1-2) will return to action on Saturday afternoon when it travels to St. John's for a 2 p.m. contest. The Terriers are fresh off their first win of the season in the home opener at Case Gym, while the Red Storm has gotten off to a 2-0 start.
SCOUTING THE TERRIERS: After back-to-back losses to Kentucky and UMass, the Terriers bounced back with a 47-35 victory over Atlantic-10 foe Rhode Island on Wednesday night. Three players scored eight points - junior Kat Briggs, sophomore Caroline Stewart and freshman Caitlynn Moran - while the squad's defense had a stellar effort, holding the Rams to just nine points in the first half. By the end of the game, URI scored 35, as BU allowed fewer than 40 points in a game for the first time since Feb. 27, 2008, when the Terriers beat UNH, 66-39.
Through three games, Moran leads the team in scoring with 12.7 points per game and 5.0 rebounds per game. She is also averaging a team-high 35.7 minutes per game and is shooting .433 from the field. Classmate Kristen Sims is also averaging double-figures with 10.5 ppg, while Stewart has posted 9.7 ppg.
As a team, BU is averaging 59.3 ppg, while shooting .335 from the field and .282 from behind the arc. The Terriers have brought down 38.0 rpg and dished out 10.7 apg, while forcing 22 turnovers per game.
SCOUTING THE RED STORM: St. John's, which is receiving votes in this week's national AP poll, has started its 2009-10 campaign with two convincing wins over Stony Brook, 89-52, and UMass, 82-52. Three athletes have tallied double-digits through two games, led by Da'Shena Stevens with 19.5 ppg. Shenneika Smith and Centhya Hart follow behind with 14.5 and 11.5 ppg, respectively. Joy McCorney has been a presence on the boards as she has averaged 10 rpg.
LAST TIME OUT VS. ST. JOHN'S (DEC. 30, 2008): BU's 13-game home unbeaten streak came to an end on Tuesday (Dec. 30, 2008) as St. John's claimed a 74-66 victory at Case Gym. The Terriers featured four players in double figures, led by Christine Kinneary ('09) with 18. Jesyka Burks-Wiley ('09) was one board shy of a double-double with 14 points and nine rebounds, while classmates Kristi Dini and Amarachi Umez-Eronini also chipped in 12 points apiece. Kinneary was 7-for-12 from the field with three rebounds, three assists, two steals and a block. Umez-Eronini had a strong defensive game with three steals and two blocks, while also dishing out a game- and season-high five assists.
BU VS. ST. JOHN'S: The Terriers and Red Storm have matched up in 13 contests over 30 years and St. John's holds the 11-2 series advantage. The rivalry opened on Feb. 3, 1979 at Carnesecca Arena in Queens, N.Y., with the the Red Storm winning by a 72-56 margin.
BU's first win came in the 1979-80 season, as it took St. John's into double overtime and left with a 90-81 win. The next season, the Terriers and Red Storm played another overtime game, a 104-94 St. John's victory.
Following those early games the two teams played regularly throughout the 1980s, however they did not meet once in the 1990s. In 2005-06, the Terriers and Red Storm rekindled the series, as St. John's defeated BU, 64-53, in the season opener. However, in 2006 the Terriers answered back with a commanding 83-64 victory at Case Gym, before falling to the Big East twice over the last two years.
BU VS. THE BIG EAST: BU is 20-53 (.274) against Big East schools and has played all but four schools in the conference - Cincinnati, Louisville, West Virginia and Villanova. Its most contested series is with Providence (6-14).
Over the past 13 years, the Terriers have gone 1-7 against the Big East with a victory over St. Johns in 2006. BU's wins have come over Connecticut, Georgetown, Notre Dame, Providence, St. John's, Syracuse and USF.
Under head coach Kelly Greenberg, BU is 1-4.
