NEW YORK - A 2009 First Team All-America East honoree, senior midfielder Samuel Appiah of the Boston University men's soccer team has been invited to participate in the 2010 MLS Player Combine, the league announced Thursday afternoon. A total of 62 college seniors from 44 Division I schools will compete in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. between Jan. 8-12.
The coaching and management staffs of all 16 MLS teams will be in attendance to scout talent at the Combine. Two days later, the 2010 MLS SuperDraft will be held on Thursday, Jan. 14, in Philadelphia. At the 2009 MLS SuperDraft, considered one of the best talent pools in SuperDraft history, 42 of the 60 players drafted attended the 2009 adidas MLS Player Combine, while 10 combine players were selected in the first round.
A 2008 Second Team All-League honoree, Appiah saved his best for last. After totaling 19 points in his first three seasons, he became more of an offensive threat his final year, recording four goals and five assists for 13 points.
Besides scoring two goals against Stony Brook (10/3), he also had a goal and assist against then-No. 23 Brown for a 3-3 tie. In the last two games of the regular season, he recorded an assist to help propel the Terriers to the conference tournament. On the defensive end, he helped BU earn shutout victories over then-No. 1 St. John's and No. 12 UConn.
Zack Kirby, the 2006 America East Defender of the Year, was the last Terrier drafted. BU assistant coach Francis Okaroh ('87) was a two-time MLS Defender of the Year with the New England Revolution. Other former MLS players include Mike Emenalo ('90) and Andy Dorman ('04).
