BOSTON - After earning First Team All-America East honors, senior midfielder Samuel Appiah and sophomore midfielder Michael Bustamante received Third Team All-Northeast Region accolades from the National Soccer Coaches' Association of America (NSCAA). The two men helped the Boston University men's soccer team earn its 24th winning season in 25 years with a 9-7-2 record.
Named AE Midfielder and Rookie of the Year in 2008, Bustamante was tabbed to the all-region squad for the second consecutive season. He improved upon last year's point total of 13, posting 10 assists and two goals for 14 points. In the 3-2 victory at Albany (10/31), he scored the first goal and then assisted on the next two. He finished the season ranked 10th in the nation for assists per game (0.56) after recording two-assist performances against Providence (9/7) and Stony Brook (10/3).
Named to the all-region team for the first time in his career, Appiah saved his best for last. After totaling 19 points in his first three season, he became more of an offensive threat his final year, recording four goals and five assists for 13 points. Besides scoring two goals against Stony Brook (10/3), he also had a goal and assist against then-No. 23 Brown for a 3-3 tie. In the last two games of the season, he recorded an assist to help propel the Terriers to the conference tournament.
Though his collegiate career is over, Appiah will try to continue playing soccer after receiving an invite earlier in December to participate in the annual Major League Soccer Player Combine. A total of 62 college seniors from 44 Division I schools will look to impress scouts and coaches in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., between Jan. 8-12.
