BU Women Knock Off Dartmouth, 5-2

Looking to avenge last season's 7-0 shutout defeat at Dartmouth, the Boston University women's tennis team earned a 5-2 victory over the Big Green Saturday afternoon at the Track and Tennis Center. With the win, the Terriers improve to 3-1 on the season with a 2-1 record against Ivy League schools, while Dartmouth falls to 0-2.
BU captured two of the three doubles contests and followed up with four wins in six contests during singles competition after being unable to earn one victory during last year's match.
In singles, Petra Santini and Francine Whu put BU up 3-0 immediately with hard-fought victories. Santini earned a 7-5, 6-3 victory over Jesse Adler at No. 1 to remain undefeated in spring play. Whu dropped her first set without winning a game but rallied to defeat Mary Beth Winingham, 0-6, 6-2, 7-5, at No. 2. Ranked 11th in the ITA East Region rankings, Molly Scott and Stefanie Nunic battled to a third set, but Dartmouth came away with the point on Scott's 6-4, 4-6, 6-1 victory in the No. 1 match.
Senior Cori Lefkowith earned the clinching point for BU at No. 4 with a 7-5, 6-2 win over Georgiana Smyser. Vanessa Steiner followed with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Ryan Reichel in No. 6. Carley Markovitz earned the Big Green's second point at No. 5 with a 4-6, 6-2, 10-4 win over Elizabeth Corrao.
For doubles, No. 3 Corrao/Santini defeated Shelley Carpeni/Carissa King, 8-3, and Lefkowith/Danielle Abraham clinched the doubles point with a 8-6 victory over Adler/Julia Zak. Dartmouth's Scott/Winingham avoided the sweep with an 8-7(4) win against Whu/Nunic at No. 1.
The Terriers will remain home for their next match, as they will host Massachusetts on Tuesday (Feb. 10) with play to begin at 3 p.m.
