BOCA RATON, Fla. - The Boston University women's tennis team won the doubles point against Richmond but failed to capitalize with a 4-3 loss at Patch Reef Park. Senior Cori Lefkowith led the Terriers with wins in both singles and doubles action, as they fell to 8-3 on the season and the Spiders improved to 10-2.
Richmond only took one of the three doubles matches but rallied in singles play with four victories to pull out the win against BU.
In doubles, Richmond earned the first win at No. 1 with Pamela Duran/Erin Clark defeating Francine Whu / Stefanie Nunic, 8-4. The Terriers though rebounded and won the next two contests to take the point. The teams of Elizabeth Corrao / Petra Santini and Cori Lefkowith / Danielle Abraham both won their respective matches with the same scores of 9-7.
In singles, the Spiders earned three of their points with two-set victories. Joanna Matuszczyk defeated Corrao, 6-0, 6-1, at No. 5, and Ashlee Vosters knocked off Yana Sadovskaya, 7-5, 6-1, in the No. 6 contest. The top singles players Duran and Whu battled hard, but Richmond earned the point with 6-4, 7-5 decision.
Lefkowith and Nunic had strong performances for the Terriers to give the team three points. Nunic earned a 6-3, 6-2 decision over Erin Clark at No. 2, while Lefkowith defeated Helen Cunningham, 6-2, 7-5, at No. 4.
Unfortunately for BU, reigning America East player of the week Santini suffered her first loss of the spring after rallying from a one-set deficit in the only three-set contest of the day. Kelly Tidwell pulled out the 7-6(5), 4-6, 6-2 decision at No. 3 to push the scales in Richmond's favor.
The Terriers return to the courts Friday in the Sunshine State against Florida Atlantic with action set to begin at 1 p.m.
