NORFOLK, Va. - The Boston University women's tennis team hung tough to the last game with No. 55 Old Dominion but could not earn the break points when needed, losing 4-3 at the Folkes-Stevens Tennis Center. With their fourth one-point loss of the season, the Terriers drop to 9-5, while the Monarchs win their fourth straight and improve to 18-4.
ODU won two of the three doubles matches and then took three singles points for the victory with the last match going to three sets. Freshman Petra Santini rallied from a one-set deficit at No. 3, but Joanna Dobrowolska pulled out a break point in the third when needed to earn the victory, 6-4, 4-6, 6-4.
In other action, junior Francine Whu dropped the first set to No. 124 nationally-ranked Charleen Haarhoff but earned a tough second set and then easily took the third for the 3-6, 6-4, 6-1 win in the No. 2 contest. Senior Yana Sadovskaya defeated Marija Citic, 6-3, 6-4, at No. 6, and classmate Cori Lefkowith knocked off Margarita Spicin, 1-6, 6-3, 6-1 at No. 4.
The other two Monarch singles points came by two-set victories with Nadine Fahoum defeating freshman Stefanie Nunic, 6-3, 6-3 at No. 1 and Irina Dementyeva beating junior Elizabeth Corrao, 7-5, 6-3.
In doubles, the first two matches ended quickly, as Corrao/Santini blanked Dobrowolska/Dementyeva, 8-0, at No. 2. In the No. 1 match, ODU's Fahoum/Spicin defeated Whu/Nunic, 8-2, to put the all-important doubles point up for grabs. The Monarchs pulled it out at No. 3, as Citic/Haarhoff defeated Lefkowith and Danielle Abraham, 8-6.
The Terriers conclude their weekend road trip to Virginia on Sunday with a visit to No. 52 VCU. Action is set to begin at 10 a.m.
